This guide explains American 8-ball: the game with solids numbered 1–7, stripes numbered 9–15, and the 8-ball. The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) rules are a clear standard, but bar, home, and league games may use different conventions. Agree on the rules before the first rack—especially called shots, break outcomes, and foul penalties.
1. Know the equipment and objective
You use a cue to strike the cue ball, which then hits the numbered object balls. The goal is to pocket all seven balls in your assigned group—solids or stripes—and then legally pocket the 8-ball. Check that the cue tip is in good condition before playing; a beginner’s guide from Howcast also recommends this basic equipment check.
2. Rack the balls
Place all fifteen numbered balls tightly in a triangle at the foot end of the table. Follow the WPA 8-ball rack arrangement rather than assuming any triangle pattern is acceptable. A tight rack helps the balls spread when struck.
3. Break
The breaker places the cue ball behind the head string and strikes the racked balls. Under the WPA rules, the break is legal if an object ball is pocketed or at least four object balls reach a rail. If neither happens, the incoming player receives the options specified in the rulebook, which can include accepting the table or requiring a re-rack under stated conditions.

If the 8-ball goes in on a WPA break, that is not automatically a win or a foul: the breaker may spot the 8-ball and continue or choose a re-break. Break scratches and other break fouls have specific procedures, so do not assume the ordinary-shot penalty applies.
4. Choose solids or stripes
After the break, the table is open until a player legally pockets a called ball. As the WPA puts it: “Before groups are determined, the table is said to be ‘open,’” in its Rules of Play, effective September 15, 2025. While the table is open, any object ball except the 8-ball may be struck first.

Under WPA rules, a player claims the group of a legally pocketed called ball; the opponent takes the other group. The break alone does not assign solids or stripes.
5. Shoot and continue your turn
Except on the break, WPA 8-ball requires you to call your shots: identify the ball and pocket you intend to use. You do not have to call every detail of the route the ball takes. Once groups are assigned, your first contact must be with one of your own group’s balls. After that contact, at least one ball must be pocketed or a ball must reach a rail.

If you legally pocket one of your group’s balls, you keep shooting. A miss or a foul ends your turn. The next player’s options depend on what happened and the agreed ruleset.
6. Avoid fouls
A scratch is a foul in which the cue ball is pocketed. Other common WPA fouls include hitting an ineligible ball first, pocketing or driving a ball off the table, or failing to pocket a ball or send one to a rail after the first contact. When an ordinary foul gives the opponent ball in hand, they may place the cue ball where permitted by the rules and shoot from there; break fouls have special procedures.

Before play, settle how your group will handle called shots, illegal breaks, break scratches, ball in hand, and 8-ball outcomes. If there is a dispute, use the ruleset everyone agreed to rather than treating a house convention as universal.

After legally pocketing all seven balls in your group, call the pocket for the 8-ball if required by your ruleset, then shoot it legally. Under WPA rules, the 8-ball is subject to the same called-shot requirement as other shots except on the break. Pocketing the 8-ball early or accidentally does not have one universal outcome across casual rules; follow the specific rules you agreed to.
