Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt depends on what you mean by “let Kar’niss go.” If you persuade him to leave without the Moonlantern, he avoids an immediate fight—but he and his convoy later return as Shadow-Cursed Undead. If you follow the convoy to Moonrise Towers, Kar’niss survives that route and can appear in Act Two’s finale. You can also side with the Harpers at their ambush and take a different route to the lantern.
What happens if you let Kar’niss leave?
If you persuade Kar’niss to relinquish the Moonlantern, he and the convoy depart without it. That can spare you the immediate ambush fight, but it is not a happy ending for the convoy: they later appear as Shadow-Cursed Undead. The distinction matters—the party has let Kar’niss go for now, not saved him and his followers from the Shadow Curse. BG3 Wiki: Kar’niss; BG3 Wiki: Branthos.
How the three routes compare
| Choice | Immediate result | Moonlantern and pixie | Convoy’s later fate | Kar’niss at the Act Two finale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Persuade Kar’niss to leave without the lantern | Avoid fighting the convoy at that encounter. | Kar’niss leaves with the lantern, so you do not obtain it through this choice. | Kar’niss and the convoy later appear as Shadow-Cursed Undead. | Not established for this route in the cited references. |
| Follow the convoy to Moonrise Towers | The lantern protects the party on the journey; the convoy route lets the party pass as True Souls. | You travel with Kar’niss’s lantern. If he reaches Moonrise with it, the pixie Dolly Dolly Dolly dies inside it. | Kar’niss survives this route and can appear in the Act Two finale. | Can appear. |
| Side with the Harpers at their ambush | Help defeat the convoy; the Harpers take the lantern and direct you toward Last Light Inn. | Under the described conditions, Isobel can provide the lantern there. Freeing the pixie inside can grant a Pixie Blessing. | The cited route description does not establish a separate later fate for each convoy member. | Not established for this route in the cited references. |
These outcomes are described in the BG3 Wiki quest reference, the Kar’niss reference, and the Moonlantern reference. The references are community-maintained, not official developer documentation.
Why the Moonlantern changes the decision
The Shadow Curse makes safe travel through the Shadow-Cursed Lands a central concern. A Moonlantern’s Moonshield protects its bearer from the curse, so giving it up is not merely a decision about whether to fight Kar’niss: it changes how you secure protection for the journey. Kar’niss’s lantern also holds Dolly Dolly Dolly. Freeing her can grant a Pixie Blessing, while the cited reference says she dies inside the lantern if Kar’niss reaches Moonrise with it. BG3 Wiki: Moonlantern.

Your entrance route can change the encounter
Do not assume every playthrough presents the same Harper ambush. Entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Rosymorn Monastery Trail can lead to meeting a goblin, summoning Kar’niss, and encountering the Harpers’ ambush. Entering from the Underdark can instead put the convoy in your path without the Harpers present, changing the initial choices available. The route descriptions are in the quest reference and Kar’niss reference.

- Persuade him to leave if avoiding the immediate fight matters more than obtaining the lantern from him—but know that the convoy’s later appearance as Shadow-Cursed Undead means this does not spare them the curse.
