Animal Crossing: New Horizons has five ordinary fruit trees—apple, cherry, orange, peach, and pear—and coconut palms. Plant ordinary fruit trees on suitable open ground around your island; plant coconut palms on sandy beaches. You can bring unfamiliar fruit home from other islands and grow it alongside your native fruit.
Every fruit tree in New Horizons
The game has six fruit types. Apples, cherries, oranges, peaches, and pears grow on ordinary fruit trees. Coconuts grow on palms and have a different planting location.
| Fruit | Where to plant it | How to get it | Native or non-native? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple | Suitable open ground on your island | Your island may have it as native fruit; otherwise, collect it from another island or another player. | May be native or non-native |
| Cherry | Suitable open ground on your island | Your island may have it as native fruit; otherwise, collect it from another island or another player. | May be native or non-native |
| Orange | Suitable open ground on your island | Your island may have it as native fruit; otherwise, collect it from another island or another player. | May be native or non-native |
| Peach | Suitable open ground on your island | Your island may have it as native fruit; otherwise, collect it from another island or another player. | May be native or non-native |
| Pear | Suitable open ground on your island | Your island may have it as native fruit; otherwise, collect it from another island or another player. | May be native or non-native |
| Coconut | Sandy beach | Bring coconuts back from other islands or get them from another player. | Non-native fruit |
Where to plant fruit trees
Plant apples, cherries, oranges, peaches, and pears on open island ground
Use suitable open ground for the five ordinary fruit trees. An orchard makes the varieties easy to find and harvest, but you can arrange them in rows, groups, or decorative plots to suit your island. Add labels or paths if they help you keep track of each type.
If a sapling does not progress where you planted it, try a more open location. There is no confirmed universal tile-spacing formula in the sources cited here, so treat spacing as a practical layout choice rather than a fixed number of tiles.

Plant coconut palms on sandy beaches
Nintendo’s beginner guidance says, “Do note that coconut trees only grow along sandy beaches.” Keep coconut palms on the sandy shore when following the standard planting guidance. iMore describes terraformed sand paths on grass as an exception once you have unlocked terraforming; that is a guide-reported option, not Nintendo’s beginner rule.
How to get all fruit types
Check your island’s native fruit
Your island has one native fruit type. Planting it is the simplest way to start an orchard, but it will not give you the complete set.

Visit other islands and friends
Nintendo recommends collecting unfamiliar fruit from other islands and planting it at home; visiting friends’ islands is a direct way to find varieties they have. Mystery-island tours can offer limited variety, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed route to every fruit type. For the full collection, you may need to trade or visit other players.

Fruit trees add color and structure to an island, and their fruit can be harvested and sold. Nintendo confirms that fruit brought from other islands sells for more than your native fruit. iMore lists the in-game sale values as 100 Bells for native fruit and 500 Bells for non-native fruit; those specific numbers are guide-reported game values, while Nintendo’s guidance confirms only the relative difference.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
For timing, iMore reports that a newly planted tree takes three days to reach full size. iMore and Game8 report that fruit returns three days after harvest. These intervals are reported by game guides; the Nintendo guidance cited here does not specify them.
