What is Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit?
Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit is an action platformer set in an 8-bit AVGN universe. Retroware’s press kit describes a story in which the Nerd takes on a corrupted monstrosity threatening every console, battling familiar enemies across stages inspired by retro games. The publisher’s site calls it “a brand new 8-bit adventure!” (Retroware official site; press kit).
Steam’s listing describes pixel-art levels, themed enemies, power-ups, sliding beneath platforms, and alternate routes to boss rooms. It also lists an Endless Challenge mode built around increasingly difficult randomized rooms, and identifies the game as single-player (Steam store page).
How does it play, and what is the review verdict?
The core appeal is familiar side-scrolling platform action with AVGN-themed enemies and routes through stages. Alternate paths and power-ups offer some variation, while Endless Challenge is a separate option for players who want randomized rooms rather than only the main stages.

In a review for STARBURST, Chris Jackson describes seven levels, alternate paths, bosses, and three difficulty settings. Jackson characterizes the experience as relatively short and simple retro-platforming. Those counts and judgments are the reviewer’s account, not specifications listed by the publisher; whether that feels like a drawback depends on whether you want a brief, straightforward platformer or a longer, more demanding one (STARBURST review).
What platforms is it on, and when did it release?
The publisher lists Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Steam gives an October 22, 2025 release date, and Nintendo UK lists that same date for the Switch version. Availability can differ by region and storefront, so check your local store for the edition you want (publisher press kit; Steam store page; Nintendo UK listing).

Is an NES version coming, and is the cartridge available?
Retroware’s official site describes an NES version as “coming soon.” That announcement establishes that a version for NES has been announced; it does not establish a shipping date, current stock, or an orderable listing. Treat cartridge availability as unconfirmed unless Retroware or a retailer publishes a current listing (Retroware official site; press kit).
Who developed the game?
The press kit credits Retroware, Programancer, and Mega Cat Studios as developers, with Retroware as publisher. Its company biographies describe Programancer as a developer who began with Duke Nukem 3D mods in 1996 and has worked on games since 2003, and Mega Cat Studios as a specialist in retro pixel-style games and new games for classic hardware and cartridges. What should PC players check before buying?
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-4300 or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, integrated graphics, DirectX 11, and 500 MB of storage as minimum requirements. Its content note flags strong language, crude humor, fantasy violence, and alcohol references.
