That was a reported source claim—not a public authentication—and the report did not establish that the kit sold.
What was offered for sale?
On July 30, 2012, HotHardware’s Joel Hruska reported that a forum user known as DaE had claimed access to an early Xbox Durango development kit and tried to sell it on Assemblergames.com for $10,000. Durango was the project name associated with the next-generation Xbox then in development; the item in the listing was described as a development kit, not a retail console.
Why was the kit called the “real deal”?
HotHardware said the forum listing was initially met with skepticism and called fake. The report then attributed a different assessment to Eurogamer: trusted sources had told the outlet the kit was real. Their identities and the evidence behind that assessment were not published in the HotHardware report, which offered no forensic examination or other public authentication.
What specifications did the report attribute to the alpha kit?
HotHardware reported that sources confirmed the alpha kit was a 64-bit machine using DirectX 11 and that its alleged 8GB of memory was legitimate. The report also described a screenshot said to show Microsoft Visual Studio. It noted the presence of immintrin.h and inferred from it that the CPU supported AVX; that was an inference about the pictured development hardware, not confirmation of a shipping console’s processor.

Those details belonged to an early development kit. HotHardware cautioned that development hardware can differ from the final product: extra memory or CPU cores can help with debugging and simulation. The article also said the claimed eight-core CPU should not be treated as a retail specification and described the supposed processor-platform claim as unsubstantiated. None of these alpha-kit claims establishes the specifications of the eventual retail Xbox.

The report establishes an attempted $10,000 sale, not a completed transaction. It does not say whether a buyer emerged, whether DaE owned the kit, or what happened to it afterward.
