Those dates have passed, so the announcement is historical—not confirmation that the controller is available now. Sony announced limited quantities and launch prices of $79.99, €79.99, £69.99, and ¥11,980 in the respective markets; those figures do not establish today’s retail or resale price.

Sony said select retailers in other global markets would also offer preorders that day. The controller was offered in limited quantities, but Sony did not state a unit count. Sony’s announcement set the release date for September 6, 2024, the same day as Astro Bot.

How does the original 2024 controller look?
The 2024 Limited Edition uses Astro-inspired blue accents on the handles and buttons, sci-fi lines carved into the grips, and a pair of playful eyes on the touchpad. Sony said the design was inspired by Astro’s in-game Dual Speeder. Sony’s reveal shows the controller and describes the design.
What does it add for playing Astro Bot?
It is a DualSense controller with Astro-themed styling, not a claim of upgraded hardware performance. Sony described using the controller’s existing haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to convey different surfaces and Astro’s powers. Its examples include the Barkster bulldog jetpack, while the Dual Speeder uses motion controls alongside haptics and adaptive triggers. Sony’s controller announcement connects those features to the game.
Team Asobi announced Astro Bot as a PS5 game with six galaxies, more than 80 levels, and more than 15 new abilities. The studio said those abilities use the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers. Team Asobi’s game announcement provides that context.

No. The Joyful Limited Edition is a later, distinct Astro Bot design reported in 2025. GamesRadar’s coverage describes a changed expression in the touchpad eyes and reports a preorder period followed by an October 30, 2025 launch. That reporting does not confirm current stock. Both editions are DualSense controllers; the cited coverage does not establish additional performance features for Joyful. GamesRadar’s Joyful edition coverage distinguishes it from the original 2024 Limited Edition.
