The “Authentication to Minecraft.net Failed” message means the check used to verify your Minecraft account did not succeed; it does not identify the cause. Start by confirming the account in the launcher, signing out and back in, and restarting the launcher. If that does not help, check your computer’s clock and then investigate network interference.
What the error means—and what it does not
Minecraft could not complete an authentication check when you tried to connect. Possible causes include stale or mismatched account credentials, a temporary launcher or service issue, or local network settings. The message alone cannot tell you which applies. A third-party troubleshooting guide lists these as possibilities, not confirmed causes for every player: Partition Wizard’s guide to Minecraft authentication errors.
A historical Java multiplayer report used the same wording after a player changed a username, but that single account does not establish a username change as the general cause: Minecraft Forum report.
Try these checks in order
- Confirm the account. In the Minecraft Launcher, check that you are signed into the Microsoft account you intend to use. If you have more than one account, make sure the launcher is not using a different one.
- Refresh the launcher session. Sign out of the launcher, close it, reopen it, and sign in again. Then retry joining the server. A community response to a similar Java multiplayer report suggested relogging; it is a sensible first check, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check your computer’s date and time. Make sure the date, time, and time zone are correct; enabling automatic time settings can help prevent an incorrect clock from interfering with sign-in.
- Check for network interference. If you use a VPN or proxy, temporarily disconnect it and try again. A firewall or restricted network may also interfere. Do not leave your firewall or other security protections disabled; if a diagnostic test requires a temporary change, restore your usual protection afterward.
- Consider launcher repair or reset. If the simpler checks do not help, the third-party guide above suggests repairing or resetting the launcher. Treat this as a troubleshooting option rather than an official or universally effective remedy, and check the launcher’s available repair options before proceeding.
Use the pattern to narrow down the problem
These comparisons are diagnostic questions, not confirmed tests of a specific cause:
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Does the error follow your account to another device? If it does, an account or service-side issue becomes more plausible than a setting unique to one computer, but this alone does not prove the cause.
- Does another account work on the same computer? If so, check which account is signed into the launcher and refresh that session.
- Does the same account work on another network? If it does, local network restrictions or configuration may be involved. Avoid changing security settings permanently to test this.
- Does it happen only on one server? That observation may help describe the problem to support, but the available evidence does not establish that a server-specific failure is the cause.
When to check service status or contact support
These steps may help isolate the issue, but they cannot distinguish every account-side, service-side, or network-side failure. No current service-status check is established here, so do not assume authentication services are either down or healthy. Check current official Minecraft status or support information before drawing that conclusion; if the problem persists, include which account, device, network, and server you tested when seeking help.
