Assetto Corsa EVO’s open-world mode is called Free Roam. KUNOS Simulazioni and 505 Games announced it on 7 October 2026 as an in-development feature set in Germany’s Eifel region. The first public playable preview is scheduled for Sim Racing Expo in Frankfurt on 16–18 October 2026; the announcement does not give a date for general release to players.
What is Assetto Corsa EVO Free Roam?
Free Roam is an announced mode for exploring the Eifel region beyond a conventional circuit session. KUNOS says players will be able to drive alone or with others, take part in dedicated activities such as optional Time Attack challenges, or simply explore without a structured event. These are planned features, not confirmation that Free Roam is available in the current Early Access build. KUNOS’s 7 October 2026 announcement describes the feature as in development.
Where will the open world be set?
The planned setting is a 1:1 recreation of Germany’s Eifel region. The first playable area is to include the Nürburgring Nordschleife, nearby villages, and connecting roads. KUNOS says the Nordschleife is 20.8 km long and that the region will expand over time to include additional representative Eifel areas.
According to the developer, roads will match their real-world length and width, with corresponding corners, junctions, bridges, and elevation changes. KUNOS has also announced changeable weather, a full day-and-night cycle, and AI traffic that varies with local trends. These are developer descriptions of the planned simulation, not independently verified performance or fidelity findings.

The first public playable showing is scheduled for Sim Racing Expo in Frankfurt, Germany, from 16 to 18 October 2026. KUNOS co-founder and Executive Manager Marco Massarutto is scheduled to introduce Free Roam on 16 October at 4:00 PM CEST, with public play stations on the show floor.
This event preview is not a general release date. The 7 October announcement does not identify an Early Access update or date that will bring Free Roam to players generally. The official announcement is the source for the preview schedule and does not state a broader rollout window.

How does the plan differ from the original open-world announcement?
In December 2024, KUNOS said the Eifel open world was expected in Early Access from Summer 2025 and would eventually cover 1,600 square kilometers. That timetable has passed. The October 2026 announcement instead describes an initial playable area and staged expansion; it does not restate the earlier 1,600-square-kilometer figure as the initial map size. The 2024 timing and scope should therefore be read as historical plans, not confirmation of current availability or a current release date. The original announcement contains those earlier targets.
Steam’s developer description also outlines a larger planned full game with exploration, hiring or purchasing cars, parts, and vehicle personalization. It does not establish those activities as available in the current Early Access build. Steam lists Assetto Corsa EVO’s Early Access start as 16 January 2025. The Steam product page describes the game and its planned full version.

Does Free Roam require a racing wheel?
No wheel requirement is stated in the Free Roam announcement. KUNOS’s game page lists support for gamepads, wheels, pedals, handbrakes, OpenXR VR, and triple-screen setups, and says it has worked with peripheral brands on optimized presets. A wheel is therefore an optional control choice, not a stated prerequisite for the mode. KUNOS’s Assetto Corsa EVO page lists supported controls and display options.
