Ashes of Creation entered Steam Early Access as an unfinished Alpha in December 2025, but later reporting said development had ceased and the studio team had been laid off. The available evidence does not confirm whether the game’s servers are still online or whether owners can log in today, so its current playability is unverified.
What “playable” means for Ashes of Creation
For an online MMORPG, “playable” is more than having a build that once launched. It means players can access the service, log in, and play reliably—and that the game is still being operated and developed. The available evidence establishes that an Early Access Alpha was released; it does not establish current server access.

What the December 2025 Early Access release offered
Steam lists December 11, 2025 as the Early Access release date and described Ashes of Creation as an active Alpha test. The developer’s listing presented it as a work in progress, not a finished game. It warned of incomplete content and systems, bugs, performance problems, balance changes, frequent updates, unstable builds, and possible realm wipes. Steam’s store listing also described intended systems such as dynamic settlements, trade and crafting, combat archetypes, open-world PvP and PvE, sieges, guild progression, and social features. The listing said some features were prototypes, some were being refined, and others had not yet been introduced; these were development goals and descriptions, not proof that every system was complete.
What changed after the Early Access release
On February 1, 2026, PC Gamer reported that development had reportedly ceased and Intrepid Studios’ team had been laid off. The outlet quoted founder and former creative director Steven Sharif saying he resigned after control of the company shifted and the board began directing actions he could not ethically support. PC Gamer also reported that the board proceeded with WARN Act notices and a mass layoff. This is a later account of the studio’s situation, not confirmation of the game’s server status.

The earlier Steam description’s claim that the game was in active Alpha testing should not be treated as a current service notice: it predates the February report. Nor does the reporting that development ceased, by itself, prove that the servers were shut down. The Steam news archive contains entries through January 2026, but those historical posts do not establish present access.
Can you log in or buy the game now?
Neither current login access nor the ability to obtain access as a new player is confirmed by the available sources. They do not establish whether existing owners can connect, whether servers remain online, or whether a current purchase route grants access. Check for a current, authoritative service-status announcement before making a decision; do not assume the old Steam store description reflects what is operating now.
What the listed PC requirements tell you
Steam lists these minimum requirements for Windows, but meeting them only addresses the listed hardware baseline; it does not show that the online service is available.

Should you consider Ashes of Creation playable?
The most accurate answer depends on what you mean:
- Was an Early Access Alpha released? Yes. Steam lists December 11, 2025 as its release date.
- Was it presented as a finished, stable MMORPG? No. The developer described an unfinished Alpha with potential bugs, instability, incomplete features, and wipes.
- Is it confirmed playable today? No. The available sources do not verify server availability or current logins.
- Is ongoing development confirmed? No. PC Gamer reported in February 2026 that development had reportedly ceased and the team had been laid off.
PC Gamer reported that the 2017 Kickstarter campaign raised nearly $3.3 million. That is historical funding context; it does not establish the game’s current condition, access, or prospects.
