Atari announced on May 23, 2024, that it had purchased the Intellivision brand, its trademarks and rights to more than 200 games from Intellivision Entertainment LLC. The deal did not include the Amico company or console business: Intellivision Entertainment rebranded as Amico Entertainment and continued that business under a licensing arrangement.
What did Atari buy from Intellivision?
Atari’s announcement described an asset purchase covering the Intellivision trademarks and rights to more than 200 titles from the company’s portfolio. It did not publish a purchase price or detailed financial terms. Atari’s May 23, 2024 announcement is the source for the stated scope.
Atari said it planned to pursue broader digital and physical distribution for legacy Intellivision games, and might develop new games and explore brand and licensing opportunities. These were announced intentions, not confirmation that particular releases or partnerships had happened.
Did Atari buy the Amico?
No. The acquisition was for Intellivision brand and game rights, not the Amico company, hardware or console business. Atari’s announcement said Intellivision Entertainment would rebrand and continue developing and distributing Amico. It also described a license allowing Amico to distribute new versions of Intellivision games on the console.

In a July 2024 update, Amico Entertainment said it retained Amico hardware intellectual property and patents, along with licensed rights to develop reimagined Amico versions of games from the classic Intellivision catalog. The distinction is between assets Atari acquired and Amico rights that remained with the continuing business:
| Atari acquired | Amico Entertainment retained or licensed |
|---|---|
| Intellivision brand and trademarks, plus rights to more than 200 portfolio titles, according to Atari’s May 2024 announcement. | Amico hardware IP and patents, according to Amico Entertainment’s July 2024 update. |
| Rights to the specified Intellivision games; Atari announced plans to expand their distribution and explore further opportunities. | Licensed rights to develop reimagined Amico versions of classic Intellivision catalog games, according to Amico Entertainment’s July 2024 update. |
Amico Entertainment’s account of what it retained appears in its July 2024 update.

What happens to Intellivision games after Atari’s acquisition?
Atari said it would seek wider digital and physical distribution for legacy games. It also said it might create new games and pursue licensing opportunities. The announcement did not set out a release schedule or confirm that specific new titles would follow, so those statements should be read as plans rather than completed outcomes.
The Amico license leaves room for reimagined versions of classic catalog games on Amico, while Atari controls the acquired brand and game rights described in its announcement. That arrangement is why “Atari bought Intellivision” does not mean every Intellivision-related project or product became an Atari asset.

Why were Atari and Intellivision rivals?
Mattel Electronics released the first Intellivision home console in 1979 as a competitor to the Atari 2600. Atari’s brand-history page estimates that Intellivision sold 5 million units through 1990. That is Atari’s published estimate, not an independently verified total.
Mattel extended the competition beyond consoles: Atari’s history says Mattel launched its M Network label in 1982 to publish games for the Atari 2600, including ports of some Intellivision titles. Mattel closed its software division in 1984, after the 1983 video game market crash.

Atari framed the 2024 acquisition as a symbolic reunion. “Uniting Atari and Intellivision after 45 years ends the longest-running console war in history,” said Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, an Atari-owned studio. That is Mika’s characterization of the rivalry, not an uncontested historical finding. Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said, “This was a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and bring together fans of Atari, Intellivision and the golden age of gaming.” Intellivision Entertainment CEO Phil Adam said, “Atari has been a valuable partner and we have every confidence they will be a responsible steward of the storied Intellivision brand.” The remarks appeared in Atari’s acquisition announcement.
