No. A Pokémon card priced above $300 is not automatically fake, and price alone cannot establish whether a particular card is genuine. Check the exact card, its condition, the seller and the purchase protections available before deciding.
Does a price above $300 mean a Pokémon card is fake?
No. Pokémon Support confirms that counterfeit cards exist, but it gives no $300 cutoff—or any other individual-card price—as a sign that a card is counterfeit. The reviewed sources do not publish an estimate of what percentage of Pokémon cards above $300 are fake, so there is no reliable probability to attach to this price band.
A high price does not prove a card is fake or genuine. Assess the particular card and transaction. Pokémon’s warning about dramatically low prices concerns booster packs compared with their suggested retail price; that warning is not a rule for judging the price of one individual card. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-product guidance does not set an individual-card price threshold.
How to check a Pokémon card before buying
- Identify the exact version. Confirm the card name, set, card number, language and version. Similar-looking cards can differ, so compare like with like.
- Compare clear images. Ask for sharp photographs of the front and back, then compare them with official product imagery. Pokémon Support recommends checking suspicious cards in bright light and says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to it. This is a clue, not a conclusive test.
- Consider a specialist evaluation. If the card still seems suspicious, Pokémon recommends asking a local specialist card shop to evaluate it. A shop’s opinion is a practical check, not a guarantee.
- Review the seller and transaction. Consider the seller’s track record, available provenance and the return or buyer-protection terms. These help you judge the purchase risk; they do not authenticate the card by themselves.
What marketplace authentication covers
For eligible US listings, eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee describes a physical inspection for qualifying single trading cards at its stated price threshold. The cited US program pages specify a $200 eligibility threshold for certain listings; that is a program rule, not a counterfeit cutoff or proof that a card is genuine. Eligibility depends on the listing and program rules, so look for the Authenticity Guarantee badge and confirm the exact listing qualifies. The service is not available for every card product or listing, and geographic and grader restrictions apply. eBay’s trading-card program page and its buyer guidance describe the applicable process; details may change.

For an eligible ungraded card, eBay says inspectors examine corners, edges, surface and overall condition against the listing. For a graded card, the inspection checks the sealed holder for tampering and verifies the case and label. This is authentication inspection, not grading or regrading: eBay says it does not assign or change a grade.
Raw cards, graded cards and specialist evaluation
| Route | What is checked | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Raw card through eligible eBay authentication | Card corners, edges, surface and overall condition against the listing, according to eBay | Only eligible listings in the program’s geographic and listing scope; inspection is not grading |
| Graded card through eligible eBay authentication | Holder for tampering and the case and label, according to eBay | Inspection does not establish that every aspect of the card’s value or condition is correct |
| Specialist card shop evaluation | A local specialist can evaluate a suspicious card, as Pokémon recommends | No formal scope, guarantee or standardized procedure is stated in Pokémon’s guidance |
A graded holder can offer useful information, but it is not an infallible seal of authenticity. PSA describes its holders as tamper-evident, not tamper-proof: an attempt to violate a holder may leave evidence, but that does not mean tampering is impossible. Review the holder and certification information, and do not assume that a slab alone proves every claim about the card. PSA’s buyer guide explains its holder-security language.

What a PSA guarantee does—and does not—mean
PSA describes a conditional guarantee with terms and exclusions. Its published terms require, among other things, that the certification was active when the card was purchased. Read the terms that apply to the specific card rather than treating a certification as an unconditional promise. PSA’s terms and conditions set out the guarantee and its limitations.
Marketplace authentication and a grading-company guarantee serve different purposes. An inspection can reduce some purchase risks; it does not certify market value, resolve every condition dispute or guarantee that all parts of a card’s history are accurate.

When to pause a purchase
- The seller will not provide clear images of both sides or enough detail to identify the exact card.
- The card’s appearance does not match official imagery for the claimed set, number, language or version.
- The holder or label raises questions, or the certification information does not align with the listing.
- The listing lacks the authentication protection you expected, or its eligibility is unclear.
- You remain uncertain after reviewing the card and terms; ask a specialist card shop to evaluate it before buying.
These are reasons to investigate further, not proof that a card is counterfeit. Judge the evidence for the individual card rather than using $300 as a shortcut.
