Some of the best-known free Xbox 360 downloads were genuinely offered at no cost, including Doritos Crash Course, Harm’s Way, and Doritos Crash Course 2. But “free then” does not mean “available to claim now”: Microsoft stopped new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. If you already own a game, you can still play it and re-download it; otherwise, check current access for your region and console before counting on a download.
Free Xbox 360 games worth looking for
These are historical free-to-play downloads documented by Xbox. Their original free price is established; that does not establish that a new player can still claim them today.

| Doritos Crash Course | An avatar obstacle-course platformer. Xbox Wire described 15 levels across three countries and local split-screen for up to four players in its 2010 announcement. | The clearest pick here for casual local multiplayer, as well as solo platforming. Xbox Wire’s 2010 announcement labeled it free. |
| Harm’s Way | A competitive race-and-shoot game in which a driver races to finish three laps while a sniper attacks competitors. | Its driver-and-sniper pairing offers a different kind of team competition from a conventional racer. Xbox Wire’s 2010 announcement labeled it free and advised checking availability in your Xbox LIVE region. |
| Doritos Crash Course 2 | A separate sequel with four new worlds. Medals and stars unlock courses, power-ups, and vanity items, according to Xbox Wire’s 2013 announcement. | A second avatar-platforming option, with progression built around earning course rewards. Xbox Wire described it as free. |

More games historically listed as free-to-play
Xbox Wire’s April 2021 list of free-to-play multiplayer games included Aegis Wing, Crackdown, Crackdown 2, Crimson Alliance, and Too Human, as well as Doritos Crash Course and Harm’s Way. The list covered more than 50 games across Xbox platforms; it was not a count of Xbox 360-only titles and does not confirm current Xbox 360 downloads. See Xbox Wire’s list and its original context.

#1 Best Overall
A separate Xbox Wire backward-compatibility catalog, published in 2016 and last updated March 29, 2018, specifically included Aegis Wing, Crackdown, and Doritos Crash Course. That dated catalog is historical evidence, not a guarantee of present compatibility or store access. View the catalog.
Can you download these games now?
Not necessarily. Microsoft ended new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Microsoft says digital games and DLC purchased before closure remain playable and can be re-downloaded. Physical-disc games also remain playable on Xbox 360. The closure announcement does not verify whether a new user can claim each historically free title, and availability may vary by region.

Microsoft also said purchases of supported backward-compatible Xbox 360 games would continue through Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. That applies to supported titles, not every Xbox 360 game or every old free download. Read Microsoft’s store-closure announcement.

Xbox backward compatibility covers select Xbox 360 games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; it is not universal. Xbox says the feature is free for games you already own, but confirm the specific title in the current official catalog before relying on compatibility. Features can vary by game.
- Compatible disc game: Install it on a compatible console and keep the disc in the drive to play.
- Xbox Series S: It supports digital games only, so it cannot play physical Xbox 360 discs.
- Digital ownership: Check that the game is supported and associated with your account; backward compatibility does not make an unowned title free.

How to decide what to try
- Choose Doritos Crash Course if you want an obstacle-course platformer and documented local split-screen for up to four players.
- Look for Harm’s Way if the driver-and-sniper team setup sounds appealing; check availability in your region.
- Try Doritos Crash Course 2 if you want another avatar platformer with medals and stars that unlock courses and items.
- For any title, distinguish an old free offer from your current ability to claim, own, or play it on your particular console.
