Yes. Cuphead can be played solo; you do not need a second player. You can play as Cuphead or Mugman, while local co-op is an optional separate way to play.

For solo play, choose either character and play without another person. StudioMDHR’s Cuphead 1.2 update announcement specifically says Mugman can be selected from the start of a single-player adventure: StudioMDHR’s 1.2 update announcement. That announcement presents this selection as a feature added in version 1.2, rather than establishing that it was available at the original launch.

The cited platform descriptions establish solo play and local co-op, but they do not provide a complete controller setup guide for every platform. On Switch, the Nintendo page’s controller requirement applies to multiplayer; a second player is not needed for solo play.

Do you need another player?
No. Local co-op is optional, and the official store descriptions explicitly include single-player. If you want to play alone, start a solo adventure; if you want to play with someone beside you, use local co-op and follow the platform’s controller requirements.
