There are exceptions, but they are not all the same: Generation I glitches can produce anomalous levels, while a specific feature in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is reported to allow temporary levels up to 200.
What is the normal Pokémon level cap?
In ordinary play, Pokémon range from level 1 to level 100. Once a Pokémon reaches level 100, it cannot earn more experience or advance to another level. Experience-granting items such as Exp. Candy do not make the normal level cap higher; the official Pokémon Sword and Shield Exp. Candy page describes the items as a way to grant experience, not as a means of exceeding level 100.

When can a Pokémon go above level 100?
Generation I glitches
In the original Generation I games, glitches such as the old man glitch and Pokémon merge glitch can produce Pokémon above level 100. These are unintended results, not a feature of normal leveling. Bulbapedia’s level-cap reference reports that an over-level Pokémon reverts to level 100 when it gains experience. Rare Candies can raise a glitched Pokémon as high as level 255; using one at level 255 causes an overflow to level 0.
These unusual values should not be read as stable levels comparable to ordinary progression: they result from glitches and can behave anomalously. Bulbapedia also reproduces Nintendo support’s description of MissingNo. as a programming quirk rather than a real part of the game.

Temporary levels in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Bulbapedia’s level-cap reference reports that Pokémon can temporarily reach levels as high as 200 in Hyperspace Lumiose in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. That is a game-specific temporary feature, not a change to the ordinary level cap across the series. The available official ranked-battle notice does not establish how every game mode handles those temporary levels.
Can a level-100 Pokémon still evolve?
Yes, if it has a level-based evolution it has not yet triggered. Since Generation VIII, using a Rare Candy on a level-100 Pokémon can trigger that evolution without the Pokémon actually gaining a level, according to Bulbapedia’s level-cap reference. Reaching the cap therefore does not necessarily prevent a pending level-based evolution.

Does battle scaling mean a Pokémon is above level 100?
No. Battle scaling changes the level used for a particular battle; it does not change the Pokémon’s stored level. In an official Pokémon Legends: Z-A ranked-battle announcement dated February 19, 2026, eligible Pokémon from levels 1 through 100 are automatically set to level 50 for that season’s battles. That is a competition rule for the specified season, not evidence that a Pokémon’s actual level has changed.

How to tell which kind of “over level 100” applies
- Ordinary progression: Level 100 is the cap; experience items do not raise it.
- Generation I glitch: Levels above 100 can occur through glitches and may revert or overflow in unexpected ways.
- Hyperspace Lumiose: A secondary reference reports temporary levels up to 200 in this specific feature of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
- Battle adjustment: A battle may use a normalized level without altering the Pokémon’s stored level.
