What is less certain is how commitment affects other romance paths: Bethesda’s support guidance explains affinity and companion stories but does not set out the rules for simultaneous relationships. And having one companion follow you at a time is a separate limit from romance.
How romance and commitment differ
Starfield’s romance system is tied to companion affinity and dialogue. Bethesda says companions can gain or lose affinity based on your actions, and that dialogue choices aligned with a companion’s morals affect how they feel. Some companions also have deeper stories that track affinity. Bethesda does not publish a complete set of rules for how multiple romance paths interact.

It helps to distinguish building affinity, pursuing a romance, and choosing commitment. A player report describes pursuing several Constellation romances before committing, but this is anecdotal rather than an official rule or a controlled test. The Steam Community discussion also reports restrictions after commitment; it does not establish that every companion, playthrough, or game version behaves identically.
For broader romance progression, GamesRadar’s Starfield romance guide describes a commitment step and the option to end a commitment. Treat that as secondary guidance, not a guarantee of every multi-romance edge case.

Does committing to one companion lock you out of other romances?
The available official guidance does not answer this precisely. The player discussion reports that commitment affects other romance options, but Bethesda’s support information does not document the exact interaction or confirm a universal sequence. If you want to keep options open, the cautious approach is to build affinity and explore dialogue before committing, and to treat commitment as a potentially meaningful choice rather than assuming it has no effect on other paths.
Which companions have romance stories?
Bethesda identifies Sarah Morgan, Sam Coe, Barrett, and Andreja as companions with individual companion missions, and says some companions have deeper romance stories. The cited support page does not explicitly provide a definitive list of every romanceable character. It does state that miscellaneous crew cannot be romanced, so do not assume every recruitable NPC has a romance path.

No such connection is established by Bethesda’s follower guidance. The support page says one typical companion can follow you at a time, with extra NPCs able to accompany certain missions. That is a limit on who accompanies your character, not evidence of a limit on active romance storylines. Bethesda’s multiple-companion support page covers the follower rule.
