The big Oblivion news is no longer upcoming: Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22, 2025. The project is a remaster, not a remake, and it is now available on Xbox, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Here’s what Bethesda changed, what each edition includes, and what to know before choosing a version.
What was the big Oblivion news?
Bethesda Game Studios announced and launched The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered in April 2025. The original Oblivion is a 2006 role-playing game; the remaster updates its presentation and gameplay while aiming to preserve the original experience. Bethesda’s official game page describes it as a modernization with new visuals and refined gameplay.
Bethesda Game Studios said development began in 2021 and explained its intent at launch: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” That statement appeared in the studio’s April 22, 2025 launch message.
What did the remaster change?
Bethesda says it remastered art, animation, special effects, and parts of the world. It recorded some new voice work while retaining original voices, and updated game systems and leveling. The studio’s stated aim was to keep the original game’s core rather than rebuild it as a remake.

The Switch 2 version launched August 11, 2026, and Bethesda says it uses the system’s hardware for motion controls. | Switch 2 option | Format | Included content |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Digital | Base game. |
| Deluxe Edition | Digital | Base game, the two named story expansions, additional downloadable content, and unique digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armor, weapon, and horse armor sets. |

The Switch 2 announcement lists the additional downloadable content as Fighter’s Stronghold, Spell Tomes, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, The Orrery, and the Horse Armor Pack. Bethesda also offers a Deluxe upgrade for existing digital base-game owners; check the game page for the platform qualifications, since Bethesda says its digital artbook and soundtrack app are available only on select platforms.

Is another Oblivion announcement still upcoming?
The announcement behind the “big news is coming” framing was the remaster, which is already released. Bethesda’s archive also lists Switch 2 Patch 1.1 dated September 17, 2026, describing fixes for multiple crashes and gameplay issues. That confirms a recent Switch 2 update, not a complete future support roadmap or the patch status of every other platform.
