Can a Child Account Use PlayStation Plus?

A child can use PS Plus through a wallet-funded subscription or selected shared benefits, but account age, console setup, content ratings, and parental controls matter.

Yes. A child account can use PlayStation Plus either through its own subscription, paid for with funds from the family manager’s wallet within the child’s spending limit, or through selected benefits shared from a subscribing family manager’s account. Age ratings and parental controls still apply.

Does a child need a separate PS Plus subscription?

No, not necessarily. Sony supports two routes: the child can subscribe using the family manager’s wallet funds, or the family manager can share certain membership benefits on a household console. A child needs a separate child account in the family; the adult family manager can create and manage accounts and set feature, communication, and spending restrictions. Sony’s family account guidance explains those controls.

Subscribe through the child account

Sony says child family members can subscribe to PlayStation Plus using funds in the family manager’s wallet, subject to the child’s monthly spending limit. This gives the child an account-level subscription rather than only access to benefits shared on a console. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus eligibility guidance says an account must have been created when its user was at least 7 years old to join; that is the rule stated on the US support page, not a guarantee of identical rules in every country.

Use benefits shared from the family manager

A family manager with a subscription can share selected benefits with child family members on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, and on one PS4 activated as the primary PS4. Sony’s console-sharing guidance lists which benefits are available to other accounts.

Which PS Plus benefits can be shared?

Benefit Can the child use it through console sharing?
Online multiplayer Yes, for supported games, subject to age and parental controls.
Games downloaded after purchase with a Plus discount Yes, on the sharing console.
Downloaded Monthly Plus games Yes, on the sharing console.
Eligible Plus game or Classics Catalog titles Yes, depending on the family manager’s membership plan and the title’s eligibility.
Buying discounted PlayStation Store products on the child’s account No; the other account’s Plus discount is not shared.
Redeeming Plus games on the child’s account No; shared access does not let the child redeem them to their own account.
Online storage, automatic patch downloads, and early access to limited-time trials No; Sony lists these as non-shareable features.

Shared access is not the same as ownership or redemption on the child’s account. For example, a child may be able to play an eligible downloaded game on the sharing console without being able to claim it as a benefit on their own account. Sony’s sharing rules distinguish shared console benefits from account-specific features.

Do age limits or parental controls block access?

They can. A child can access only Plus content that is appropriate for the content’s age rating and allowed by the parent’s settings. Network features, including multiplayer and communication, may also be restricted by the child’s age or parental controls. Having Plus does not override those restrictions. Sony’s parental-control instructions cover game and content access, communication, spending, and playtime. They also describe age-based presets and a monthly spending limit; a child can request an exception for a restricted game for the family manager or appointed parent or guardian to review.

Does the child need Plus to play online?

For most PS4 and PS5 games, Sony says online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, but some games are exceptions. Check the specific game’s PlayStation Store listing rather than assuming the requirement applies to every title. Even when Plus access is available through sharing or the child’s own membership, age and parental-control limits still govern network access. Sony’s US membership guidance describes the multiplayer requirement and exceptions.

Which subscription route makes sense?

  • Choose the child’s own subscription if the child needs account-specific features such as online storage or redeeming Plus games on their own account. Subscription payment uses family manager wallet funds and remains subject to the child’s spending limit.
  • Use sharing if the family manager already subscribes and the child mainly needs eligible benefits on a supported household PS5 or primary PS4.
  • Check the plan if the child wants catalog games: eligible catalog access depends on membership tier. Sony’s US support page lists Essential, Extra, and Premium, but availability and plan features can vary by region and change over time. Consult the current regional plan comparison.
  • Review age and spending settings before deciding: the subscription route does not determine what age-rated content or online functions the child is allowed to use.

Sony’s account terms also make features and restrictions subject to device and country availability. Check the rules and current plan details for the account’s region; the PlayStation Network terms identify that regional and device qualification.
