Yes—if you own Minecraft, you can play with friends without buying a Realms subscription. For free local multiplayer, play over the same network; for online play, a friend can invite you to a Realm they pay for. Console players may still need their platform’s online-multiplayer subscription, and everyone must use compatible Minecraft editions.
Which free multiplayer option fits your group?
| Option | Does the joining friend pay for a Realm? | Can you play while the host is offline? | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAN world | No | No | Same local network, compatible edition and versions |
| Friend’s Realm | No; the Realm owner pays | Yes | Same edition family; console online access may also be required |
| Online server | Not necessarily | Usually, if the server stays online | Compatible edition and server; someone must operate or host it |
| Game trial | No game purchase during the trial | Not applicable | Trial allows LAN, but not online servers |
How to play together for free over LAN
LAN is the simplest no-Realms option when everyone is in the same home or otherwise connected to the same local network. Minecraft’s Bedrock guidance requires the latest game version, devices that support LAN play, and the same network connection: Minecraft Help: Bedrock LAN multiplayer.
- Make sure everyone has the same edition family—Bedrock or Java—and compatible, up-to-date game versions.
- Have one player open a world. On Bedrock, enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players in the world settings.
- Have the other players join the host’s LAN game from Minecraft’s multiplayer/friends options.
A LAN world is available only while its host has the world open. It is not an always-online world that friends can visit when the host is away. Minecraft distinguishes LAN play from online servers in its multiplayer and server guide.
How to join a friend’s Realm without paying for Realms
If you and your friends are in different locations, one player can pay for a Realm and invite the others. The invited players do not need their own Realms subscriptions; the owner pays for the shared, always-online world. See the Minecraft Realms FAQ.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The joining player still needs access to Minecraft itself. A Realm subscription covers the hosted world, not a copy of the game for every player. Console players may also need a separate platform subscription for online multiplayer.
Do your devices and editions work together?
Different devices do not automatically mean cross-play will work. Minecraft multiplayer is edition-specific: Bedrock players join Bedrock players, and Java players join Java players. Bedrock supports cross-play among compatible Bedrock devices. Java Realms cross-play covers Windows, macOS and Linux; Java and Bedrock players cannot simply join each other’s ordinary worlds. Check Minecraft’s Realms compatibility details and LAN requirements for your setup.

Do console players need another subscription?
Possibly. Minecraft says console online multiplayer may require an active platform subscription, naming Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online. This is separate from Realms: a guest can avoid paying for a Realm and still need the relevant console service to play online. Minecraft notes that console players may also need a subscription in some LAN situations, so check the account and platform requirements if a local game does not connect.
Can you use a free Minecraft or Realms trial?
Minecraft’s game trial permits LAN multiplayer but disables online multiplayer servers, so it is not a way to join friends online. Eligible first-time Realms users may receive a 30-day Realms trial; eligibility can vary. Check the renewal terms and cancel before the trial ends if you do not want a charge. Details are on Minecraft’s Realms FAQ and Java demo information.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Friends cannot see a LAN world: Confirm all players are on the same network, have compatible editions and current versions, and that Bedrock’s LAN visibility and multiplayer settings are enabled.
- A console player cannot join online: Check whether that platform account needs an active online-multiplayer subscription.
- Java and Bedrock players cannot join: They are on different edition families; use matching editions for ordinary multiplayer.
- Friends cannot enter the world when the host leaves: A LAN world closes with the host’s session. Use a Realm or a server that remains online for persistent access.
