Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best Baldur’s Gate 3 mods depend on what you want to change: movement and camera controls, combat challenge, camp scenes, character appearance, screenshots, progression, or inventory management. These ten recommendations, drawn from PC Gamer’s guide, cover those different needs rather than claiming one universal ranking. Check each mod’s page for current Patch 8 compatibility, dependencies, installation instructions, and platform availability before downloading.
Choose mods by what you want to change
These mods affect different parts of a playthrough. Controls, camera, dyes, character heads, and photo locations mainly change how you interact with or view the game; ambushes and expanded progression can alter gameplay more substantially. Carry-weight options are a convenience choice. The descriptions below reflect PC Gamer’s recommendations, not independent testing of each mod.
For movement and interface controls
- WASD movement: Lets mouse-and-keyboard players move using WASD, closer to the direct movement style of a gamepad. Consider it if point-and-click movement is not your preference.
- Hybrid UI: Offers an interface option for players who prefer using a controller. Check the mod’s instructions and compatibility notes before installing, since interface changes can depend on the game version and setup.
For a different camera perspective
- Native Camera Tweaks: Adds camera options, including a classic CRPG-style tilt. It is a choice for players who want more control over the game’s viewing angle.
For tougher or more reactive combat
- Hunted – Dynamic Ambushes and Revenge System: Adds reactive ambushes and revenge encounters, giving players who find encounters too comfortable a way to seek a more challenging feel. Treat this as a gameplay change, and review its current requirements before adding it to an existing run.
For camp scenes and story content
- Camp Event Overhaul: Aims to address Act 1 camp scenes that can be missed or are difficult to trigger. If you are using it to pursue particular scenes, read its current page for instructions and limits rather than assuming it will recover every missed event.
For character appearance
- Faerun Colours: Adds dye options for changing outfits. PC Gamer described it as including more than 90 dyes with unlimited uses; that figure is PC Gamer’s description, not an independently verified count here.
- Faces of Faerun: Adds head options for player characters, expanding character-creation choices.
For easier screenshots
- Photobooth: Adds waypoints to locations for using the game’s photo mode. It may suit players who want to reach screenshot settings without opening save files and navigating to locations manually.
For progression and inventory convenience
- Expansion Level 13-20: Allows progression beyond the base game’s level cap and lets players adjust XP rates. This substantially changes progression, so check the mod’s details before using it in a campaign.
- Carry Weight Increased: Offers configurable carry-weight increases for players who want less inventory pressure. Confirm the available settings on the mod’s current page.
Before installing: check the route, version, and platform
Patch 7 introduced Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager and Toolkit. Larian says its official modding pipeline uses mod.io and is intended to improve compatibility and accessibility; third-party modding remains possible. The official pipeline applies stability and Terms of Service checks to PC mods, with additional curation for console availability. Some script-heavy and NSFW mods may not be supported through it. Read Larian’s Community Update #27 and the official mod support FAQ for the current policy.
PC Gamer outlines four possible installation approaches: the in-game mod browser, Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Manager, manual installation of a .pak file, and manual installation of loose files. The right route depends on the individual mod; some larger game-changing mods may require additional programs. The in-game browser supports one-click downloads but has a more limited selection than script-extender-enabled modding. Follow the mod’s own instructions rather than choosing an installation method by habit.

Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
- Verify Patch 8 status: Check the mod page for a current compatibility statement, required game version, dependencies, and any known limitations. A recommendation in a guide does not guarantee that a mod’s current release works with your setup.
- Check platform access: A mod available to PC players may not be available on console. Consult the listing for the platform you intend to use.
- Plan for multiplayer: Larian’s FAQ says participants in modded multiplayer need the exact same mods at the same version.
- Consider cross-saves: Larian cautions that cross-saves should use mods available on the destination platform, so check both ends before moving a modded save.
Where Script Extender fits
PC Gamer identifies Norbyte’s Script Extender as Patch 8 verified and often required by other mods. It is an installation utility or dependency, not one of the ten experience-changing recommendations above. Do not install it automatically: first check whether a mod you want requires it and follow the relevant installation instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a shortlist for your run
- Pick the problem you want to solve. Start with one category—controls, camera, challenge, camp events, appearance, screenshots, progression, or inventory—rather than installing a collection without a goal.
- Read the individual mod page. Confirm its current Patch 8 compatibility, dependencies, installation route, and platform availability.
- Check your play context. For multiplayer, coordinate the exact mods and versions with everyone. For cross-saves, verify that the destination platform supports the mods in the save.
- Install according to the mod’s instructions. Use the in-game manager or another supported method as specified by that mod; some mods require additional utilities.
For other play styles, PC Gamer also lists alternatives including Lone Wolf, Many More Monsters, Early Access Scenes restored, Transmog Enhanced Revamped, Unsoiled, and Feat Every Level. Treat those as additional options to investigate, not as a claim that their current releases are compatible with every Patch 8 setup.
