Borderlands 4 Specializations are a post-campaign skill tree that adds another layer to your Vault Hunter’s build. You unlock it after completing the campaign, then level it through XP and activities. Its four branches—Survivor, Brute, Sharpshooter, and Runner—offer bonuses such as health, shields, gun damage, status-effect chance, and cooldown rate. Choose points to complement your existing class skills rather than expecting one branch to be best for every build.
What are Specializations in Borderlands 4?
Specializations are an additional skill tree that becomes available after you complete the campaign. You gain progress in it by earning XP and completing activities. The Epic Games Store’s endgame guide describes the system as a way to add bonuses that support your character’s existing skills and abilities.
The four interconnected branches are Survivor, Brute, Sharpshooter, and Runner. The guide names health, shields, gun damage, status-effect chance, and cooldown rate among the bonus categories. It does not publish a complete branch-by-branch breakdown of which stat belongs to which branch, so use the names as broad cues, not as a substitute for checking the bonuses shown in your game.
How Specializations differ from class skill trees
Your Vault Hunter’s class-specific skills and the Specialization tree are separate systems. Each class has its own Action Skills and branching passive abilities, including augments and capstones. Gearbox Creative Director Graeme Timmins described the class system in a PlayStation Blog feature: “Each Vault Hunter class in Borderlands 4 offers a unique playstyle that empowers you to choose from three signature abilities that serve as your Action Skills.” Specializations add another set of choices after the campaign; they do not replace those class-specific trees.

Which Specialization branch should you choose?
There is no officially established best branch or validated ranking across Vault Hunters and endgame situations. The Epic Games Store guide’s advice is to spend points in ways that complement your character’s skills and abilities. Start with the bonuses you want, then compare them with how your current build works.
- Review your class setup: Consider which Action Skills and passive abilities you use most, and what would support them.
- Identify the gap you want to address: The published guide lists health, shields, gun damage, status-effect chance, and cooldown rate as bonus categories.
- Check the branch details in-game: Survivor, Brute, Sharpshooter, and Runner are useful broad labels, but the guide does not define a definitive role chart for them.
- Consider the whole build: Select points that fit your skills, preferred playstyle, and other build choices instead of investing based on a branch name alone.
The available official material does not provide published performance statistics or prove that one Specialization produces a particular improvement. Treat the tree as a way to tune a build, not a guarantee of a universal power boost.
