Yes—streams can be used for fishing in Conan Exiles if you can place a Fish Trap in sufficiently deep water. Fishing uses a baited trap rather than a handheld rod, and the game does not guarantee that every stretch of stream will accept one.
How fishing works in Conan Exiles
The standard fishing method is to place a Fish Trap underwater and load it with bait. The Fish Trap entry lists Fat Grub, Handful of Insects, Worker Bee, and Queen Bee as bait options; bait types can produce different fish. A trap does not passively catch fish without bait.

What determines whether a stream works?
Water depth is the key placement constraint. The game’s Chef Journey instructions say fish traps can only be placed in deep enough water. That means a shallow stream section may reject the trap, while another, deeper section may allow placement. The available instructions do not specify a numerical minimum depth or establish that every stream has a valid spot. Chef (Journey)

Fixes if a trap does not work
- It will not place: Try a deeper part of the stream. This follows from the stated depth requirement; it is not a guarantee that another spot will work.
- It is placed but catches nothing: Check that bait is loaded, since the standard trap requires bait.
- You are on a particular map or build: Do not assume every river or stream location behaves alike. Player reports mention placement issues in some Isle of Siptah inland-water locations and in a 2026 discussion, but these are anecdotal rather than universal rules: inland water placement discussion and fish trap bug report.
Map and version context
Funcom says Conan Exiles Enhanced merges the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah worlds for eligible Steam owners, with availability beginning May 5, 2026.
