Yes. A DUALSHOCK 4 can provide basic control on a PS3 over USB, and historical reporting says wireless Bluetooth pairing is possible on PS3 system software version 4.60 or later. It is not a full replacement for a DUALSHOCK 3: some controller features and individual games may not work properly.
What works—and what does not
A 2014 report by TIME says the PS3 recognizes the DUALSHOCK 4 as a generic controller. That can be enough for basic inputs, but recognition does not guarantee that every button maps correctly or that every game will accept it.

Sony’s PS3 online guide says the vibration setting applies only when the connected controller supports the PS3 system’s vibration function. A DUALSHOCK 4 being recognized therefore does not mean all PS3-specific features are available.
Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to a PS3
Use a USB cable
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS3 with a compatible USB cable.
- Try the controller in the game or menu you want to use. Basic input may work, but the result depends on the game and the controller’s limited mapping.
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support instructions document USB pairing with PS4 or PS5, not PS3. They do not establish PS3 compatibility or guarantee that a cable will resolve a game-specific problem.

Pair over Bluetooth
TIME’s 2014 report describes wireless pairing after updating the PS3 to system software version 4.60. The historical menu path is Settings > Accessory Settings > Manage Bluetooth Devices; choose the option to register a new device and follow the on-screen pairing steps. This is secondary reporting, not a current Sony guarantee, and behavior may differ across console software or controller revisions.
Why a DUALSHOCK 3 is more dependable
If you need PS3-specific behavior—particularly reliable vibration—or want the controller designed for the console, use a DUALSHOCK 3. Sony’s PS3 guide documents the console’s controller-specific vibration setting, while TIME’s report describes the DUALSHOCK 4 as a generic controller with feature and game limitations. The available sources do not establish a complete list of games that work with the DUALSHOCK 4.

Use the DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS4 again
Sony says a DUALSHOCK 4 is paired with one console at a time. To pair it again with a PS4 after using it elsewhere, connect it to the PS4 with a compatible USB cable and press the PS button. This is Sony’s documented PS4 procedure, not a PS3 troubleshooting step.
