The project became Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth main-series entry, and Capcom says it was released on February 27, 2026. “Resident Evil 9” was common shorthand around the announcement; it was not the official title Capcom later gave the game.
What Capcom announced in 2024
During Capcom NEXT: Summer 2024, Koshi Nakanishi announced that a new Resident Evil game was in development. A contemporaneous secondary account identifies Nakanishi as the director of Resident Evil 7: biohazard and says he was leading the new project. The account describes him discussing the challenge of finding a substantial direction after Resident Evil 7; it does not establish plot or gameplay details. Read the contemporaneous announcement account.
What the project became
Capcom later announced the title as Resident Evil Requiem, calling it the ninth main-series entry. Its release announcement gives February 27, 2026, as the release date. Capcom’s release announcement names FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and returning agent Leon S. Kennedy, and frames their experiences as contrasting. That is the publisher’s description, not an independent assessment.

How players are engaging with it
Capcom’s live global statistics page, updated October 8, 2026 JST, reported 39,513,360 plays and 25,415,515 clears. It gave a worldwide average first-playthrough completion time of 19 h 14 min, including restarts, cutscenes, and pauses. These are aggregate Capcom platform statistics, not a review sample or a prediction of how long an individual player will take.
Separately, Capcom reported more than six million players worldwide on March 22, 2026. That is a dated milestone, not the current player count. In the same anniversary message, series executive producer Jun Takeuchi wrote: “Last month, we released Resident Evil Requiem. With the return to Raccoon City, the place where it all began, we combined the two hearts of the series—horror and action—and packed them both into one title.” Read Capcom’s anniversary message.
