The best Black Coat build depends on which Aspect you choose: Melinoë rewards critical-hit support and shielded Omega Attacks, Nyx rewards a dash-to-burst attack loop, and Selene rewards repeated mortar hits to charge a Hex. There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of boons or Daedalus Hammer upgrades across Aspects, Fear levels, and play styles, so build around the loop you want rather than chasing a supposedly definitive list.
How the Black Coat shapes a build
Xinth, the Black Coat, was introduced as one of the Nocturnal Arms in Supergiant’s Olympic Update. Its kit combines a fast close-range jab combo, a homing-mortar Special, and an Omega Attack that braces behind a shield before firing a cannon blast.

That mix gives you three useful build-planning questions: Do you want to strengthen the attack combo and its critical windows, rely on the shielded Omega Attack for safer bursts, or land mortar hits often to support a Hex? The weapon’s moves suggest those priorities, but they do not establish that any particular boon or Hammer upgrade deals the most damage.
The independent Hades 2 Wiki lists the Omega Attack at 20 Magick and 180 base damage, and the Special at 40 base damage. Treat those as wiki-listed game values, not developer-published or independently tested performance figures; check the current in-game version if the exact numbers matter to your build.

Choose an Aspect before choosing your upgrade direction
| Aspect | What it changes | Build direction | Best fit if you prefer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melinoë | Increases critical damage across moves and strengthens shield absorption, according to the Hades 2 Wiki. | Support critical hits and make deliberate use of the shielded Omega Attack. | A flexible attack-and-defense loop with critical-hit opportunities. |
| Nyx | Dashing briefly makes Melinoë invisible; the first attack after leaving stealth is a guaranteed critical and applies a blinding curse, according to the Hades 2 Wiki. | Dash into stealth, then time an attack for the guaranteed critical. | A mobile, burst-oriented loop built around re-entering combat after a dash. |
| Selene | Mortar hits charge the current Hex faster and lower the threshold needed to activate it, according to the Hades 2 Wiki. | Land mortar hits consistently to support more frequent Hex activation. | A ranged loop that makes Hex use a central part of the run. |
These are different play styles, not a proven ranking. The available sources do not identify a best Hex for Selene or establish which Aspect performs better overall.
What boons to look for
Choose boons to reinforce the behavior your Aspect already rewards. Because the available evidence does not compare specific boon combinations, the priorities below are synergy guidance—not a tested tier list.

For Aspect of Melinoë
Favor boon effects that complement critical damage and your preferred way of delivering attacks. If you use the shielded Omega Attack often, consider how a boon supports that measured, protected burst rather than selecting only for the fastest possible attack sequence. The Aspect’s documented strengths are critical damage and shield absorption; the sources do not establish which god’s boon or individual effect is best.
For Aspect of Nyx
Favor effects that work with your dash-and-attack rhythm: dash to enter stealth, then make the first attack after leaving it count. Supergiant creative director Greg Kasavin explained that the general “keep-sprinting-for-a-big-blast” idea was moved into Nyx’s Black Coat Aspect. That context supports the sprinting loop, but it is not evidence that Nyx is numerically stronger or that a particular Sprint boon is mandatory.

For Aspect of Selene
Favor a boon setup that lets you keep landing mortar hits and make the Hex you find useful when it activates. The Aspect supports faster Hex charging and a lower activation threshold through mortar hits; it does not prescribe one Hex or prove that Hex-focused play outperforms the other Aspects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose Daedalus Hammer upgrades
Use the same principle for Hammer choices: read the offered upgrade against your Aspect and the moves you actually use. An upgrade that improves a neglected move may be less useful to your run than one that strengthens your main attack loop, even if its description sounds powerful in isolation.
- Melinoë: weigh upgrades by whether they help your critical-hit plan or make your shielded Omega Attack more useful in your usual combat rhythm.
- Nyx: look for an upgrade that complements the attack you use after dashing out of stealth; avoid assuming every attack-focused upgrade benefits that timing equally.
- Selene: consider whether the upgrade helps you land mortar hits consistently, since those hits support Hex charging and activation.
No source here establishes a ranked list of Black Coat Hammer upgrades, their comparative damage, or which choices remain optimal at a given Fear level. Treat each offer as a fit-to-build decision, not a guaranteed best pick.
Check patch context before relying on an interaction
Black Coat interactions have changed through fixes. A Steam announcement listing for Post-Launch Patch 2 Hotfix 3, dated June 3 (the retrieved entry does not state a year), says Nitro Boost, a Hermes Sprint boon, was fixed to affect Sprint speed as expected while using the Black Coat. It also records a fix for a Chronos attack that could be completely negated with the weapon. These are examples of patch-sensitive behavior, not recommendations to build around either interaction.

Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- Pick the Aspect that matches your loop: critical hits and shield use for Melinoë, stealth-to-burst attacks for Nyx, or mortar-supported Hex use for Selene.
- Build around the move you will use: decide whether your run will lean on the jab combo, Special, or Omega Attack rather than trying to improve everything at once.
- Take compatible boon and Hammer offers: prioritize effects that support that move and Aspect; the evidence does not justify treating a specific offer as universally best.
- Reassess after patches: verify interactions in the game version you are playing, especially if a choice depends on Sprint behavior or another weapon-specific effect.
