Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a main-story run in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, keep partner Pikachu in your party and use the other five slots to cover a range of types and the opponents ahead. There is no single officially designated best team: a useful squad is one whose Pokémon and moves can answer different matchups, and whose members you enjoy using. This guide offers a flexible story-team framework, Gym and Elite Four checkpoints, and a separate approach for postgame Master Trainers.
How to build a strong story team
Trainer battles allow a party of up to six Pokémon, and both a Pokémon’s type and the type of the move it uses affect damage. The official battle-preparation guidance recommends choosing Pokémon and moves with type matchups in mind. Treat the lineup below as a practical starting point, not an official ranking or a guarantee that levels and move choices will not matter.
Keep partner Pikachu as your flexible core
Partner Pikachu cannot evolve, but it can learn exclusive moves, including Floaty Fall (Flying), Splishy Splash (Water), and Zippy Zap. Those options give it more ways to contribute than its Electric typing alone suggests. Build the rest of the party around coverage you want rather than trying to evolve the partner.
Use the other slots to fill gaps
A balanced party can include a reliable Water option, a Ground answer, Grass or Fire coverage, and Pokémon or moves that help against the League’s Ghost and Dragon specialists. The exact species can vary with what you have caught and which moves are available to you; the important thing is to avoid relying on one attack type for every problem.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Water coverage: useful against Rock- and Fire-type opponents; Pikachu’s Splishy Splash may also contribute if you choose to use it.
- Ground coverage: a sensible answer to Electric opponents and a useful type-based choice against the Poison Pokémon Team Rocket uses, such as Ekans and Koffing.
- Grass or Fire coverage: gives you options against different opponents and helps reduce dependence on a single type.
- League answers: include moves and Pokémon that can respond to Ice, Fighting, Ghost, and Dragon themes rather than assuming one fixed roster covers them all.
These are strategic role suggestions based on type matchups, not official recommendations for specific Pokémon. Change members as your collection, moves, or next challenge changes.
Use the Gyms as coverage checkpoints
The official Kanto regional guide identifies several Gym Leaders by specialty. Gym entry conditions can also require Pokémon of particular types or levels; check the condition you encounter in-game, since requirements vary.

| Challenge | Specialty or role | Team-planning use |
|---|---|---|
| Brock | Associated with Rock | Consider Water or Grass attacks as type-based coverage. |
| Misty | Water | Bring an Electric or Grass option; partner Pikachu’s Electric typing can help. |
| Lt. Surge | Electric | Ground coverage is a useful counter to consider. |
| Erika | Grass | Fire coverage is one potential answer. |
The matchup suggestions in the final column are strategy inferences from the listed specialties, not a claim that a particular party member is required. Choose a Pokémon and move that fit your own team and current progress.
Prepare for the Elite Four without locking into one roster
The Kanto guide names the Elite Four sequence as Lorelei (Ice), Bruno (Fighting), Agatha (Ghost), and Lance (Dragon). A general story team should have answers across those different themes, but the best choice depends on the Pokémon and moves you have developed by then.

Adjust your preparation for battles and catches
Some Legendary Pokémon encounters require you to defeat the Pokémon in battle before you get a chance to catch it. Nintendo’s tips for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! advise preparing a strong team, but do not establish a universal level threshold. Strengthen the party you have rather than relying on an unsupported level target.
The same tips explain that catching Pokémon and sending them to Professor Oak can earn in-game Candies that strengthen Pokémon. This is one progression option; it is not necessary to follow a specific Candy routine to build a useful party.

Why postgame Master Trainers need a different team plan
After you become Champion, Master Trainers devoted to individual Pokémon species offer a different kind of challenge. Many require a same-species battle and prohibit items, so broad type coverage is less central than preparing and training the particular Pokémon the opponent expects. The Kanto guide describes these encounters as postgame content; they are not simply another step in building a general-purpose story squad.

Quick decisions when a matchup is going badly
- Your attack is not doing much: check the move’s type as well as the type of the Pokémon using it; changing the move or switching Pokémon may help.
- Your party lacks a useful answer: swap in a Pokémon with a more suitable type or move for the next challenge instead of treating the current lineup as permanent.
- You are preparing for a particular Gym: check its in-game entrance condition and the Leader’s specialty before choosing your party.
- You are facing a Master Trainer: plan for the species-specific rules of that fight rather than applying the story-team framework unchanged.
