There is no single objective ranking of the best PC action games: a tense survival-horror game and a fast shooter ask for very different things from a player. This curated list values historical influence, sustained critical recognition, distinctive action, variety across subgenres, and an identified PC version. It is a guide to enduring choices, not a promise that every classic feels modern or is currently available in every region.
How to choose an all-time PC action game
“Action” covers several kinds of play, from first-person shooters to action RPGs, hack-and-slash games, and action-adventures. Metacritic’s all-time PC action category sorts by Metascore, while other lists use different criteria. Neither produces a definitive answer for every player.

Historical influence and a recommendation for what to play now are also separate judgments. PC Gamer’s feature “The most important PC games” says its focus is how games changed the PC landscape, even if they are no longer fun or possible to play today. Its FPS guide, updated in July 2026, instead describes games its editors would recommend “today, right now.” The selections below balance those perspectives while giving each game a distinct reason to be here.
Best PC action games across different styles
Half-Life 2 — best for a landmark narrative shooter
Valve’s 2004 first-person shooter is a strong starting point if you want combat threaded through a story-led campaign. Its place near the top of an all-time Windows PC aggregation reflects its enduring recognition, but influence is not the same as a guarantee that its presentation will feel contemporary. Choose it for a classic single-player FPS experience rather than open-world exploration or competitive play.

#1 Best Overall
Half-Life — best for seeing the roots of the story-driven FPS
Valve’s 1998 shooter offers an earlier point of comparison with Half-Life 2: a foundational PC FPS built around a single-player journey. Its historical significance is a key reason to consider it; players used to newer shooters should be prepared for an older game rather than expecting modern conveniences. The Acclaimed Video Games chart lists it among its all-time Windows PC selections, but that chart aggregates appearances across lists rather than measuring player preference or sales.
Elden Ring — best for open-world exploration and demanding combat
FromSoftware’s 2022 action RPG suits players who want to discover a large world at their own pace and learn through challenging encounters. Compared with a tightly directed shooter, it gives exploration a much larger role and asks for patience with deliberate combat. It is a modern choice for players who enjoy testing builds and skills, not the easiest entry for someone seeking a brisk, linear action campaign.
Dark Souls — best for deliberate, high-stakes action
FromSoftware’s 2011 action RPG is a useful contrast to faster shooters: combat rewards timing and careful decisions, and difficulty is central to the experience. Its more structured world and measured pace appeal to players who enjoy learning enemy patterns and navigating a challenging adventure. If you want rapid movement and constant forward momentum, a shooter such as Titanfall 2 is a better fit.
Hades — best for fast runs and repeatable combat
Supergiant’s 2020 hack-and-slash action RPG and roguelike shows that an action game does not need a huge 3D world to offer variety. Its combat is built around repeat runs rather than one uninterrupted campaign, making it a good pick if you like short, energetic sessions and refining your approach over time. Choose another game if you specifically want a long, exploratory world or a traditional FPS.

- Follow-up to the award-winning hit Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Explore the sprawling new game world of Arkham City, which is five times larger than the first game
- Uncover a range of new and enhanced gameplay features
- Interact with and battle against an all-star cast of classic Batman characters, vicious villains and despicable deviants
- Become immersed in the all-new engaging storyline
Batman: Arkham Asylum — best for superhero action and focused exploration
Rocksteady’s 2009 action-adventure brings superhero combat and exploration into a more focused setting than an open-world RPG. It is a good fit for players who want a single-player action adventure with a strong character identity rather than gunplay or a highly demanding combat loop. Its Windows PC listing establishes the platform, not whether a particular edition is currently sold or works well on a given setup.
Titanfall 2 — best for a tightly paced modern FPS campaign
Respawn’s 2016 first-person shooter is the list’s later-generation FPS pick. Consider it if you want a more contemporary shooter than Half-Life or Half-Life 2 and prefer direct campaign momentum to open-ended exploration. Its inclusion here is as a PC-identified action option; check the current edition and access terms before buying, especially if you are choosing it for a particular multiplayer mode.
Rank #4
- Improved NPC conversation system where Commander Shepard can take matters into your own hands – interrupting or using force to get the answer required.
- The second act of BioWare's epic sci-fi RPG trilogy continues the story of Commander Shepard and humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.
- Integration with the original Mass Effect game allows players to import saved files and contiue play with those files in Mass Effect 2.
- Choose from 19 different weapons, including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
- New location based damage system allows for targeting of key weak points, blasting off limbs, igniting enemies, or cripple and disable enemy troops.
Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) — best for tense, resource-conscious action
This remake is a third-person survival-horror game whose action is slower and more pressured than a fast shooter. GamesRadar’s 2026 action-games selection highlights its ammunition scarcity and PC platform listing. The limited-resource pace is the point: choose it if you enjoy tension and careful decisions, not if you want constant high-speed combat.
Doom Eternal — best for high-intensity FPS combat
Doom Eternal represents the fast end of the action spectrum: it is a modern shooter choice for players who want frequent, forceful combat rather than a slower survival-horror rhythm. PC Gamer discusses it in its current FPS recommendations, and GamesRadar includes it in its 2026 action selection with PC among the listed platforms. Its appeal is intensity, so it is a less natural choice if you prefer quiet exploration or deliberate, low-ammunition encounters.

A PC platform label in an editorial list is a useful starting point, not proof of present-day access or compatibility. The sources cited here do not establish current regional availability, prices, system requirements, edition differences, or performance on a particular computer.
Quick Recap
- Open the current store listing for the exact game and edition you want.
- Confirm it is available in your region and check the listed operating-system and hardware requirements.
- For an older release, verify compatibility and any edition-specific features rather than assuming a platform label guarantees a smooth experience on a modern PC.
- If you want multiplayer or co-op, check that the specific mode you care about is included and accessible in the edition being sold.
