The best Nintendo 3DS games for open-world fans offer different kinds of freedom: flexible dungeon order, a huge RPG setting, repeatable monster hunts, or an evolving town. They are not all seamless open worlds, so this list ranks them by exploration, player choice, world scale, activity variety, accessibility, and hardware requirements.
How “open world” applies to Nintendo 3DS games
On 3DS, “open world” is best treated as a spectrum rather than a strict genre label. Some games let you roam a broad setting; others offer connected RPG areas, a focused adventure map with flexible objectives, repeatable hunt zones, or a town you shape over time. The picks below explain which kind of exploration each game actually provides.
Best Nintendo 3DS open-world and exploration games
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Best for: A classic adventure with meaningful freedom in how you tackle its dungeons.
Nintendo describes A Link Between Worlds as a continuation of the story of A Link to the Past, set in Hyrule with new puzzles and dungeons. After an initial progression point, many dungeons can be completed in an order of your choosing. Link’s ability to merge into walls adds a distinctive spatial puzzle mechanic that also changes how you explore.

- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
This is a focused Zelda adventure, not a claim of a modern seamless open world. Its strength is how much control it gives you over the route through its challenges. Nintendo lists its 3DS release date as 22 November 2013.
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Best for: Players who want a large setting and a long-form RPG.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D builds its world across two giant titans, giving exploration a much larger scale than the compact, objective-led structure of a traditional adventure game. It is the strongest choice here if expansive RPG environments are your priority.

- Battle it out as Nintendo's greatest heroes
- Nintendo's greatest heroes are in the palm of your hand
- Take the fight with you, wherever you go
Hardware requirement: This version is limited to New Nintendo 3DS models; it does not run on the original 3DS. The scale comes with a narrower hardware-access path.
3. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Best for: Repeated hunts, learning enemy behavior, and improving your equipment.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is built around studying monsters, taking on hunts, and using the resulting progression to improve your gear and face greater challenges. Its hunt zones and repeatable activity loop reward familiarity and preparation, rather than offering a conventional seamless overworld to roam.

The game works on the original 3DS. Nintendo Life recommends a New Nintendo 3DS for camera control and frame rate, so the newer model is a preferred experience rather than a compatibility requirement.
4. Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Best for: A relaxed, open-ended world shaped by daily choices rather than combat or quests.

5. DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Best for: A quest-driven RPG adventure with exploration at its center.
DRAGON QUEST VIII follows a quest to save Trodain. Nintendo identifies it as the eighth installment in the series and an RPG. It is a strong fit for players who want a traditional story-led role-playing adventure rather than a sandbox or life simulator. Nintendo’s feature says the story differs from other entries, so prior Dragon Quest games are not necessary to follow it.
6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Best for: A classic adventure world presented as a 3DS remake.

Ocarina of Time 3D brings the classic Zelda adventure to 3DS. Its world is designed around exploration, secrets, puzzles, and structured progression. It is a good choice if you want a landmark adventure format, but it is not an open-ended sandbox.
7. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D
Best for: Structured exploration with a distinctive time-loop premise.
Also a remake, Majora’s Mask 3D centers on a repeating time cycle that shapes how you explore and help the people of its world. That structure gives the game a different rhythm from free-roaming open-world games: learning schedules and planning actions around the loop are central to its appeal.
