For story-led real-time action, start with Hades; for poker-inspired card strategy, consider Balatro; for a classic run-based deckbuilder, try Slay the Spire; for action-platforming, look at Dead Cells; and for twin-stick shooting, choose Enter the Gungeon. This is a preference-led shortlist of roguelikes, roguelites and run-based hybrids—not a ranking or a complete list of games released in 2024.
How to choose a Switch roguelike
“Roguelike” is a flexible label, not a guarantee that two games share the same structure. Nintendo’s catalog describes the appeal through permadeath, learning, restarting, persistence, adaptation and replayability. Nintendo Life likewise notes that roguelike elements can appear in games that are not straightforwardly roguelikes, making the term useful but vague. This guide includes roguelites and run-based hybrids alongside games commonly called roguelikes.

Choose by the decisions and pace you want from a run. Real-time action rewards movement and timing; card-based games give you room to consider choices. Then consider whether you want a strong story thread, combat that emphasizes shooting or platforming, and how much you enjoy trying again with new possibilities. The sources do not provide standardized scores across these qualities, so the picks below are organized by play style rather than ranked.
- For story and fast action: Hades.
- For poker-inspired card runs: Balatro.
- For a run-based deckbuilding example: Slay the Spire.
- For action-platforming: Dead Cells.
- For twin-stick shooting: Enter the Gungeon.
Which Switch roguelike fits your play style?
| Game | Best fit | What distinguishes it | Source-backed qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hades | Players who want story-led, real-time action | Mythic weapons and ability builds, voiced characters, and story that advances across escape attempts | Nintendo describes it as a rogue-like dungeon crawler. Its US product listing identifies a digital edition. |
| Balatro | Players drawn to poker-inspired card strategy | A card-focused alternative to action-heavy runs | Nintendo Life lists its Switch release date as 20 February 2024 in both North American and UK/EU entries. |
| Slay the Spire | Players looking for a run-based deckbuilder | A representative example of how some deckbuilders fit the roguelike mold | Nintendo Life uses it to illustrate the category; that does not make every deckbuilder a roguelike. |
| Dead Cells | Players who prefer action-platforming | An action-focused counterpoint to card and shooter picks | Nintendo Life includes it among reviewed Switch selections in its guide; the cited material does not establish a technical or performance comparison. |
| Enter the Gungeon | Players who want twin-stick shooting | Tactile combat, random levels, weapons, items and secrets, with replayability | Nintendo Life describes it as a twin-stick roguelike. |
Story-led action: Hades
Hades is the clearest match here if you want combat and narrative to move forward together. Nintendo describes the player as the immortal Prince of the Underworld, using Olympus’s powers and mythic weapons to escape while growing stronger and uncovering more story with each attempt. Its official product copy also claims “thousands of viable character builds” and “thousands of unique story events”; those are Nintendo’s promotional counts, not independently verified measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- BANISH THE NIGHTMARE FROM YOUR REALM; The Nightmares are spreading within Reverie, corrupting everything in their path
- You must hone your skills and find the strength to defeat the creatures of the Nightmare using unique hero abilities
- To defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will need a strong build, focus and excellent teamwork
- The world of Reverie is built on old folk tales and legends; from the Three Little Pigs to Norse mythology to One Thousand and One Nights
- Run after run, play as different heroes, make the most of the upgrades and items you find, and explore
Nintendo UK lists the Switch release date as 17 September 2020, so Hades is an earlier release that remains relevant to a 2024-oriented shortlist. The US Nintendo listing supports TV, tabletop and handheld play, lists single-system play for one player, and gives a file size of 5.8 GB. That page presents a digital edition; it does not establish whether a physical game-card edition is available.
Card strategy: Balatro and Slay the Spire
Balatro
Balatro suits players who want poker-inspired, run-based card play rather than real-time combat. Nintendo Life lists its Switch release as 20 February 2024 for both North America and the UK/EU. That makes it the shortlist’s clearly dated 2024 Switch release; this guide does not claim to cover every roguelike released on the platform during that year.

Slay the Spire
Slay the Spire is a useful reference point for players seeking a run-based deckbuilder. Nintendo Life cites it when explaining that some deckbuilders fit the roguelike mold, while many do not. The distinction matters: a game’s use of cards or runs alone does not establish that it belongs to the genre.
Action-platforming: Dead Cells
Choose Dead Cells if you want an action-platforming option rather than a card game or a twin-stick shooter. Nintendo Life includes it as a reviewed Switch selection in its guide. The evidence cited here supports its place in a genre shortlist, but not claims about comparative performance, technical quality or how it runs in specific Switch modes.
Rank #3
- Play Solo or Co-Op - Play solo or unite with friends to stand off against the Knights of the Round Table. 1-2 players can combine the strengths of your characters in surprising ways and master abilities to become knights worthy of standing off against Arthur himself.
- Explore a fallen Camelot - Meet familiar friends and foes from Arthurian legend. Discover the source of spreading darkness over Avalon. Befriend and learn from powerful figures such as Merlin and Nimue. Take up your sword as a Soulforged knight.
- Wield the power of the Fae - Swear fealty to the Fae Lords, and choose from over 200 unique blessings to unleash your full potential. Will you wield the cleansing fires of Titania or take the blessings of Oberon to strike with the fury of the wind?
- Unleash your Creativity - Versatility thrives in the ever-changing battlegrounds of Camelot. Combine your blessings with unique character, weapon, and ability selections. Test thousands of unique builds as you become a seasoned knight.
- Become worthy - Upgrades from the Beacon of Avalore will forge your squire into a worthy champion over time. However, if you believe you are already worthy of facing Arthur, get ready for a challenge that will put your skills to the test.
Twin-stick shooting: Enter the Gungeon
Enter the Gungeon is the shooter-oriented pick. Nintendo Life describes it as a tactile, replayable twin-stick roguelike, highlighting satisfying combat alongside random levels, weapons, items and secrets. It is a natural fit if aiming and shooting are more appealing than building a deck or following a story-led action adventure.
What “of 2024” means for this list
This is a recommendation for choosing among Nintendo Switch roguelikes in a 2024 frame, not a release-year ranking. Balatro is listed by Nintendo Life with a 20 February 2024 Switch release date in North America and the UK/EU; Hades, by contrast, was listed by Nintendo UK for 17 September 2020. The available information does not establish a complete inventory of Switch roguelikes released during calendar year 2024.
For current prices, regional store status, updates and exact retailer formats, check the store or retailer serving your region. Nintendo’s cited US Hades listing confirms a digital edition, not the format of every offer elsewhere.
