CHUCHEL Reviews: Is Amanita Design’s Comedy Adventure Worth Playing?

CHUCHEL’s animated comedy and oddball scenes charm some players, while its short length and loose puzzle progression may leave others wanting more.

CHUCHEL is a short, comedy-first adventure built around animated comic scenes and simple puzzles. Reviews praise its visual humor and surprise, but its loose progression and brief length may not suit players looking for a substantial story or challenging puzzle game. It is most appealing if you want an accessible, playful experience and are happy to trade depth for laughs.

What kind of game is CHUCHEL?

Developed and published by Amanita Design, CHUCHEL was released on March 7, 2018. Its premise is straightforward: Chuchel and rival Kekel face puzzles and odd challenges while trying to retrieve a cherry. The official Steam listing describes it as a comedy adventure, and advertises original puzzles alongside hundreds of whimsical animations.

Rather than build toward a complex plot, the game moves through interactive comic vignettes. Meristation’s review describes a succession of comic situations and generally simple puzzles. The animation, sound, and visual surprises are central to the experience; solving each scene is often more about experimenting with what is on screen than mastering a deep puzzle system.

What do the reviews praise—and criticize?

The appeal: visual comedy and surprise

Meristation reviewer Yago Lago praised the game’s playful surprises and described it as “un festival cómico que no dejará de sorprendernos” (“a comic festival that will keep surprising us”). The Steam page also displays short review excerpts calling it “Comedy gold” (Destructoid), “A giant cuddle of a game” (Rock Paper Shotgun), and “Silly in the best possible way” (The Verge). Those snippets convey the kind of response its distinctive humor can inspire, though they are not a substitute for a detailed review.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

The caveat: loose progression and limited substance

Meristation found CHUCHEL unusually simple and short compared with Amanita Design’s earlier adventures. A US App Store reviewer, writing on December 2, 2018, objected that parts of the game felt like “touching the screen randomly until something happens,” and criticized its cohesion and narrative heft. That is one player’s opinion, not a universal description, but it points to a real preference split: players who enjoy playful trial and error may find the scenes charming, while those who want clear puzzle logic or a strong narrative may find them arbitrary.

How long is CHUCHEL?

Meristation estimated roughly two hours and suggested many players could finish it in one sitting. This is a reviewer’s estimate, not a controlled timing study or a guaranteed completion time; pace will vary with how quickly you work through the scenes. The important buying consideration is that this is a compact adventure, not a long campaign.

Is CHUCHEL worth playing?

It is a good fit if you value expressive animation, sound-driven jokes, and a steady stream of surreal comic situations more than difficult puzzles or an involved story. Its simple presentation also makes it easy to dip into, and its short length can suit a single-session play. Consider another game if you need puzzles with consistently clear solutions, a cohesive narrative, or many hours of play.

Storefront indicators were positive when checked, but they are changing snapshots rather than fixed measures of quality. Steam showed 85% positive from 1,486 English-language reviews; the US App Store showed 4.6 out of 5 from 634 ratings. These scores come from different platforms and reviewer populations, so they should not be compared as equivalent ratings. Steam notes that periods of off-topic review activity are excluded from its score. See the Steam listing and US App Store listing for their current indicators.

Platforms and age rating

Steam lists the game for Windows and macOS. Apple’s US listing specifies iPhone and iPad compatibility and gives it an age rating of 4+. That rating is the platform’s label, not a guarantee that the humor or every scene will suit every child. The Apple listing also shows English plus 24 additional languages. Availability, compatibility, and price can vary by region and change, so check the relevant local storefront before buying.

Steam separately lists a soundtrack and art book as digital content. These are optional digital extras, not physical editions of the game.
