In some classic D&D lore, female drow are regarded as stronger than males—but that is a cultural belief, not a rule that every female drow is physically stronger. The answer depends on whether you mean social power in a particular drow society, physical capability in the fiction, or a character’s Strength score in the game rules.
What does classic drow lore say about strength?
The 3.5-era sourcebook Drow of the Underdark describes female drow as being regarded within their culture as stronger, smarter, and more emotionally controlled than males. It presents that view as part of a broader female-dominated hierarchy associated with Lolth worship, reproduction, and the interests of women who already hold power. It is a description of a society’s beliefs, not a measured comparison of every drow.

The distinction matters: the same book recognizes that some highly skilled drow crafters, warriors, and arcane casters are male. A male drow can therefore be formidable; the cultural hierarchy does not establish that every female is physically stronger or more capable than every male.
Does female social status mean greater physical strength?
No. Rank and physical ability are different things. In Menzoberranzan, the 2021 D&D Beyond overview describes a hierarchy in which female students of Arach-Tinilith outrank male masters of Sorcere despite similar magical aptitude. That illustrates how gendered authority can shape status independently of an individual’s abilities.

So, if “stronger” means more socially powerful in the classic Lolth-centered setting, female drow often occupy the higher position. If it means that every female has greater physical might, the sources do not establish that. They provide no named statistic quantifying a sex-based strength difference.
Do D&D rules give female drow a Strength bonus?
2014 rules
No. The D&D 2014 Basic Rules say a character can be male or female without gaining special benefits or hindrances. They also give a male drow cleric as an example of a character who defies traditional drow gender divisions. Read the 2014 Basic Rules: Personality and Background.

2024 rules
The 2024 Basic Rules define Strength as physical might and have players assign ability scores during character creation. The official overview of the 2024 Player’s Handbook says ability score adjustments come from backgrounds rather than species. The reviewed rules do not give female drow a Strength adjustment based on sex. Read the 2024 Basic Rules: Creating a Character; see D&D Beyond’s overview of the 2024 Player’s Handbook species.

- Lore: Some classic D&D material describes female superiority as a belief and social convention in drow culture, especially in Lolth-worshipping societies.
- Individual capability: That convention does not prove that every female drow is stronger than every male; the older sourcebook itself acknowledges skilled male drow.
- Character mechanics: The 2014 rules explicitly remove sex-based benefits or hindrances, and the 2024 rules reviewed here do not assign female drow a Strength bonus.
These claims concern D&D lore and rules, not every fictional drow community or another game’s interpretation.
