Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG that makes its battles feel unusually hands-on: you choose actions from menus, then react to attacks and time your own. TechRadar reviewer Rob Dwiar found that its Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world, sombre story, strong performances and reactive combat made it a compelling experience, though he also noted long cinematic passages and thin tools for tracking side quests.
Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 worth playing?
If you want a story-led RPG with striking art direction and combat that asks for more than menu choices, it is an appealing fit. Dwiar praised the visuals, voice performances, combat and gripping narrative after spending more than 40 hours with the PS5 and PS5 Pro versions. He also described it as a game that converted him to turn-based combat; that is his response, not a guarantee that the style will suit every player. (TechRadar review)

The main trade-offs in that review are pacing and navigation. Some cinematic sections go on a bit, and side quests can be harder to keep track of without a journal or minimap. If you enjoy a melancholy, performance-led story and do not mind managing a dense combat system, those drawbacks may be worth accepting; if you want brisk scenes or clear quest tracking, they matter more.
What is the story and setting?
Each year, the Paintress marks a number on a monolith, and people older than that number disappear. Expedition 33 sets out to stop the cycle. The premise is best approached with as little foreknowledge as possible: the game’s mystery is part of its pull.

The official site describes the world as inspired by Belle Époque France, recast as a surreal fantasy landscape rather than a historical setting. Its combination of beauty and melancholy gives the journey a distinctive tone. (Official game site)
Is the combat turn-based?
Yes. You select actions for your party in turn-based encounters, but execution includes real-time inputs. The publisher describes dodges, parries, counters, attack rhythms and free-aim targeting of enemy weak points. Those reactions make defence active, while timed attacks and aiming add an execution layer to the planning. (Official game site)

- European/ UK version
There are six playable characters to build into a party, giving you room to shape how you approach fights. The depth is also a hurdle: several mechanics and terms arrive alongside one another, so players looking for simple, largely hands-off menu combat may find the system demanding. (Kepler Interactive)
What are exploration and side quests like?
The publisher describes journeys across distinct landscapes, with hidden quests, allies and a companion that unlocks travel methods and access to secret areas. That promises discovery beyond the main route, but the practical downside identified by Dwiar is that there is no journal or minimap to help track side quests. Players who like to explore freely may welcome the openness; those who prefer a checklist or map markers should expect to keep their own bearings. (Kepler Interactive; TechRadar review)
