Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is a Beautiful, Challenging RPG—and My Game of the Year So Far

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is my game of the year so far because it makes familiar turn-based RPG combat feel immediate: every turn can become a test of timing, observation and nerve. Its fantasy world, shaped by Belle Époque France, and its story about trying to break a recurring death cycle give those fights a memorable setting and purpose. That combination will not suit everyone, but players who want an emotionally charged RPG that asks them to engage with combat rather than simply select commands have a strong reason to try it.

What is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

Released on April 24, 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a narrative-led RPG set in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. Its premise is stark: each year, the Paintress paints a number on a monolith, and people of that age die. Expedition 33 sets out to end the cycle; Gustave and Maelle are among the expeditioners on that mission. The publisher’s official game page describes the setting, story and game features.

The Belle Époque influence is an artistic reference, not a claim that the game recreates historical France. The world is fantastical, and its landscapes, surreal enemies and exploratory spaces serve that fiction. Exploration also includes secrets and hidden quests, while a companion unlocks additional ways to travel and reach concealed areas.

Why the combat feels different from traditional turn-based RPGs

The structure is turn-based: you choose actions for a party of characters. But the player is not entirely passive while enemies act. Dodging, parrying and countering depend on timing, and some attacks can be chained by learning their rhythm. Free aim lets you target enemy weak points. The result is a system in which a menu choice is only part of the decision; reading an attack and reacting well can matter just as much.

You build and level a six-character party, shaping each character through gear, stats and skills. The choices matter not only individually but in how abilities and characters work together. That gives the combat two layers: planning a party and its synergies between encounters, then responding to an opponent’s patterns in the moment. Bandai Namco summarizes the design as: “In this evolution of JRPGs, real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat.” That is the publisher’s description; the practical distinction is that timing is built into the turn-based structure rather than replacing it.

Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hard?

It can be demanding, particularly if you expect turn-based combat to let you wait through enemy attacks without input. The challenge described in Le Monde’s review comes from learning encounters: treating a fight like a score to understand, anticipating attacks and chaining parries. The reviewer compares some encounters more to FromSoftware games than to Final Fantasy. That is one critic’s characterization, not a universal difficulty rating or a guarantee that every player will find the game equally hard.

A useful way to judge the fit is to ask whether you enjoy observing enemy animations and improving your timing through practice. If you do, the pressure can make a familiar command-based battle feel satisfying. If you would rather make tactical choices without reflex tests, the active defenses may feel like an obstacle. Its difficulty is therefore as much about the kind of engagement you want as about a fixed measure of challenge.

What makes its world and music stand out?

The visual identity grows from the contrast between an elegant Belle Époque-inspired frame and a strange, dangerous fantasy world. Landscapes and surreal enemies help the setting feel distinct, while exploration invites you to look beyond the main route for secrets and hidden quests. The publisher highlights Unreal Engine 5 visuals and the game’s environments; the appeal is not historical accuracy, but the way a recognizable artistic influence is reshaped into something uncanny.

Music is another part of the game’s identity. Le Monde praises how the soundtrack shifts between intense combat and melancholy passages, giving different emotional weight to action and quieter moments. Sandfall Interactive reported on October 8, 2025, that the original soundtrack had accumulated more than 333 million track streams since release. That is a developer-reported cumulative figure as of that date, not a current streaming total.

Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 worth playing?

For me, yes: the game’s greatest strength is how its systems and tone reinforce one another. A story about trying to interrupt a recurring catastrophe is paired with battles that ask you to pay attention, learn patterns and act with intent. The setting and soundtrack give that struggle a distinct mood. This is why it is my game of the year so far, not a claim that it is objectively the best game of 2025—or that it will be the right RPG for every player.

It is a particularly good fit if you want:

  • A fantasy setting with a strong Belle Époque-inspired visual identity.

What changed after launch?

Sandfall Interactive reported five million copies sold worldwide five months after release, in a post dated October 8, 2025. The developer also reported the soundtrack stream total noted above in that same post. These are figures attributed to the developer and tied to the stated date.

SEGA’s announcement dated December 12, 2025, says Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won nine awards at The Game Awards 2025, including Game of the Year. SEGA also reported that the free Thank You update released in December added a new area, music, challenging late-game bosses, photo mode, additional localizations and PC FSR 4 support. Those are details of a dated update, not a claim that it is new in 2026.
