CEO Strauss Zelnick called a Switch 2 version “doable” in May 2026, but did not announce a restart or schedule. The available statements do not confirm that the port has been canceled.
What happened to the Switch 2 version?
The Switch 2 edition was originally announced for October 3, 2025. On September 23, Gearbox delayed it to an unspecified date, saying the game needed additional development and polish. That was the company’s stated reason; the announcement did not identify performance problems as the cause. Nintendo Life reported Gearbox’s delay announcement.

On February 3, 2026, Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis told Variety, “We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU.” Lewis also said the company remained focused on post-launch content and optimization for the released versions. In May 2026, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reportedly described a Switch 2 version as “doable,” while saying the company was focused on improving the PC and console editions before expanding to more platforms. Neither statement set a date or confirmed that development had resumed. Nintendo Life reported the February pause; it reported the May comments.
As of October 8, 2026, the latest relevant update in these reports is the May 2026 comment. It leaves open the possibility of a future port but is not a commitment to make one. “Paused” should not be read as either a confirmed cancellation or a promise that the game will eventually arrive.

What happened to Switch 2 pre-orders?
Nintendo eShop orders
Gearbox said Nintendo eShop digital pre-orders would be canceled under Nintendo policy when it announced the delay. If you placed a digital pre-order, check your Nintendo account and payment records for the cancellation and any applicable refund details. The announcement did not provide a new order date.
Physical retailer orders
For physical pre-orders, contemporaneous coverage directed customers to contact the retailer where they placed the order. Check that retailer’s cancellation and refund terms rather than assuming every store handled the order the same way.

Can you play Borderlands 4 now?
Borderlands 4 launched on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, according to Take-Two’s launch announcement. These are released editions; their availability does not mean a Switch 2 edition is out. The sources cited here do not establish current prices or retailer stock.

Should you cancel a physical pre-order?
If you have a physical Switch 2 pre-order, contact the retailer to confirm whether it remains active and what cancellation or refund options apply. For a Nintendo eShop digital pre-order, Gearbox said it would be canceled. With no announced release date, keeping a physical order is a personal choice—not a way to secure a confirmed launch slot.
