The Black Ops 6 assault rifle nerf explicitly identified in Treyarch’s Season 04 patch notes was for the CR-56 AMAX: the update increased its View Kick strength and deviation, making recoil harder to control. The notes do not describe a base-damage reduction for the AMAX. This was a targeted weapon adjustment, not a nerf to every assault rifle.
What changed on the CR-56 AMAX?
Treyarch described the CR-56 AMAX as “receiving a recoil nerf” in the Black Ops 6 Season 04 patch notes. The listed adjustment increased View Kick strength and deviation. In practical terms, the change concerns how much the weapon’s aim shifts while firing; the cited note does not list a base-damage reduction or a time-to-kill change.
The same notes adjusted a recoil-control option. While focused, the Marksman Foregrip’s View Kick reduction increased from 15% to 30%, and its Gun Kick reduction increased from 20% to 30%. Treyarch said players may want additional recoil-reducing attachments to remain effective at longer ranges.
Was every Black Ops 6 assault rifle nerfed?
No. Treyarch characterized the Season 04 assault rifle changes as targeted corrections to the highest- and lowest-performing weapons, saying overall AR balance was in a good spot. The same update buffed the AK-74’s maximum damage range from 0–38.1 m to 0–40.6 m, with the minimum-damage threshold moving from beyond 38.1 m to beyond 40.6 m. That is a range increase, not a nerf.

How later patches affect the answer
Assault rifle balance depends on the patch being discussed. The September 3, 2025 Season 05 notes record further changes to the AK-74, including a 0–11.4 m maximum-damage band at 29 damage, and a damage-range increase for the Goblin Mk2. Earlier, the Season 02 notes also increased the Goblin Mk2’s maximum and medium damage ranges and made usability changes. These examples show why “assault rifle nerf” is too broad without a weapon and patch date.
The Season 04 notes establish the AMAX recoil change, but do not establish that it remains the latest or current live balance state. Activision’s known-issues page is a running issue tracker, not a complete patch archive; its July 10, 2026 update date alone does not confirm whether a separate balance patch followed.
