If Borderlands 4 closes or does nothing after you select Play in Steam, work through the checks below in order: confirm your PC meets the game’s requirements, verify the installation, test for software conflicts, then collect diagnostics if it still fails. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes for every system.
1. Check whether your PC meets the requirements
Compare your hardware and available storage with the current Borderlands 4 PC system requirements. The page was updated May 29, 2026, and lists these minimum and recommended specifications:

The performance figures are expected targets for the listed specifications, not a promise that every PC will perform identically or launch successfully. Gearbox says it cannot guarantee the game will run on PCs below the minimum requirements. Recheck the official page for its full recommended hardware details before making an upgrade decision.
2. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Borderlands 4 and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish checking and repairing the installation, then try launching the game again.

3. Test for overlays and security-software conflicts
Temporarily turn off overlays, then try launching once. Check Steam’s overlay and any others you use, including Discord, GeForce Experience, or MSI Afterburner. If the game launches, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify a possible conflict.
Check whether antivirus or firewall software has blocked a Borderlands 4 file. If needed, add an exception for the game folder rather than leaving protection disabled. If Steam or the game cannot access its network, test once with VPN software turned off. Restore your usual security settings after testing.

4. Update the graphics driver and allow shader compilation
Install the current driver from your GPU maker’s official source: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. If the game is stuck compiling shaders for an unusually long time, the Borderlands 4 guide recommends restarting the game and the PC, then trying again. It estimates compilation takes about 10 minutes on most PCs; allow time for it to finish rather than assuming an early pause is a launch failure.
Changing graphics settings also triggers shader recompilation. After a settings change, give the game time to complete that work before judging performance.

5. Test administrator and compatibility settings
The Borderlands 4 guide suggests trying Run as administrator and Windows compatibility mode for Windows 10. 2K also describes administrator steps for Steam and the game. Treat these as temporary diagnostic tests: if they make no difference, return to the usual launch settings. The official instructions are in the Borderlands 4 troubleshooting guide and 2K’s Steam guide.
6. Simplify the launch setup
- Disconnect your controller and test a launch with keyboard and mouse. 2K notes that some connected controllers can cause unexpected conflicts.
- If you use user-created mods, remove them temporarily. Mods are not tested for compatibility and can stop working after a patch.
- Back up your saves before attempting a reinstall.
7. Check for CPU instability and escalate if needed
Gearbox’s troubleshooting guide flags possible instability under load on Intel 13th- and 14th-generation processors. That is a documented possibility, not proof that a particular CPU is the cause of a launch failure. Avoid broad system changes based on that note alone.
