If a child account gets Minecraft’s Drowned error after Bedrock 1.21.120, start with the official Microsoft-account sign-in checks: refresh the account session, update Minecraft, and check platform service status. A parent should review child-account settings only if the account needs a restricted online feature. A child-account login issue was reported after 1.21.120, but the historical report does not show that every Drowned error today has the same cause.
What the Drowned error means
Minecraft Help defines Drowned as a Microsoft account sign-in problem: “The Drowned error means there was a problem signing in to your Microsoft account.” It is therefore different from a message that specifically says an account’s setup prevents online multiplayer. The sign-in error can appear before multiplayer permissions become relevant.
Minecraft’s recommended troubleshooting sequence is to refresh the account session, confirm the game is updated, check the platform’s service status, and try changing Microsoft account credentials if the earlier checks do not help. See Minecraft Help’s Drowned error instructions.
Was Drowned caused by the 1.21.120 update?
There was a historical report of a child-account login problem after Bedrock 1.21.120. A Mojang tracker result for Windows issue MCPE-230909, dated November 5, 2025, is marked “Unconfirmed” and “Duplicate” and points to MCPE-230429. The linked issue describes child Microsoft accounts being unable to log in with Drowned after the update and reports a resolution date of November 6, 2025.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
That history makes an update-related problem plausible for players who encountered it at the time, but it does not establish the cause of a current error, whether the same issue remains active, or whether other platforms were affected. A Microsoft Q&A thread opened October 30, 2025 also contains player reports about 1.21.120 and child accounts; those accounts are user experiences, not official diagnoses.
Try these checks in order
- Refresh the Microsoft account session. Follow the sign-out and sign-in instructions on Minecraft Help’s Drowned troubleshooting page, then retry the sign-in.
- Check for a Minecraft update. Install any available update for the edition and platform being used, then try again.
- Check platform service status. A service-side problem can interfere with sign-in, so check the relevant platform status before making repeated changes to the device or account.
- If the official checks fail, consider the account credentials. Minecraft Help includes changing Microsoft account credentials among its troubleshooting steps. If the account belongs to a child, involve the parent or adult account owner.
- Get help with useful details ready. Contact Minecraft Help or Microsoft support and provide the platform, Minecraft edition and version, exact error message, and whether the child account can sign in elsewhere.
When a parent should review child-account settings
Minecraft directs parents to Xbox account settings to manage child access to multiplayer, clubs, Realms, adding friends, and communication. The available controls and the definition of a child account can vary by region. The parent or adult family owner should review the setting for the particular feature the player is trying to use. See Minecraft’s parental controls guidance.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
These permissions govern online features; they are not a general repair for Microsoft-account authentication. If the child can sign in but Minecraft explicitly says the account setup prevents online multiplayer, follow Minecraft Help’s child-account multiplayer troubleshooting. That message points to a permissions issue, unlike Drowned’s sign-in diagnosis.
Check third-party app consent only for the matching notice
Microsoft documents a separate child-account restriction for a specific notice saying a parent blocked access to games and apps not published by Microsoft. If that is the message on screen, the adult who originally granted consent can review third-party app access using Microsoft’s instructions for third-party apps. Do not broaden app access as a generic Drowned fix when that restriction is not shown.

What about the Wi-Fi workaround reported by players?
In the Microsoft Q&A discussion, some players described launching Minecraft with Wi-Fi disabled and reconnecting afterward, or launching through an adult profile. Reports have contradictory outcomes: some players said the approach helped them enter the game, while others still could not use online services or Marketplace content. These are unverified community workarounds, not Minecraft’s recommended fix, and they may not restore full online access. The thread is Microsoft Learn Q&A: “Drowned error code fix”.
