Minecraft’s online joining guidance names PlayStation Plus as a requirement, and the PlayStation Store listing says “PS Plus required for online play.” Linking a Microsoft account does not replace that subscription.
What each account or subscription does

Can you play Minecraft with friends without PS Plus?
Not if the friend is remote and you are joining an online world or Realm from PlayStation. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PS Plus, subject to game-specific exceptions; Minecraft’s Store listing expressly marks PS Plus as required for its online play. Check the PlayStation online multiplayer requirements and the live Minecraft listing for current platform details.

A Microsoft account link is an additional Minecraft setup step for cross-platform play or Realms, not a workaround for console online access. Having the account linked alone will not let you join an online friend without the subscription.
What you can do without an online subscription
Play locally on the same console
If the other player is physically with you and you share a console, local split-screen is a different option. Minecraft says console versions of Bedrock support split-screen local multiplayer. This does not connect you to someone playing remotely. See Minecraft’s multiplayer overview for the local-play distinction.

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10

- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Choose based on where the other player is
- Remote friend: online play requires PS Plus on PlayStation.
- Same room and console: local split-screen may work without joining an online friend’s world.
- Cross-platform friend or Realm: link a Microsoft account to PSN as well as meeting the PlayStation online-play requirement.
Check these things if Join is unavailable
- Check the subscription. Confirm the PlayStation account being used for online play has active PS Plus.
- Check the players and invitation. Both players should be online and connected as Minecraft friends where required; use Minecraft’s Bedrock world joining guidance for the join flow.
- Update the game. Minecraft recommends that players use the newest game version when troubleshooting connection problems.
- Check edition compatibility. Java and Bedrock use different servers and cannot play together. Console PlayStation Minecraft is Bedrock; confirm the other player is on a compatible Bedrock version. See Minecraft’s multiplayer information.
- For cross-platform play or Realms, check account setup and permissions. Link Microsoft to PSN and verify multiplayer permissions, particularly if the PlayStation account belongs to a child.
Player counts shown on the PlayStation Store
The current US PlayStation Store Minecraft listing, accessed in 2026, gives up to eight online players with PS Plus and a four-player local count. These are figures for that listing and edition in that region; they should not be treated as universal limits for every version or configuration. Consult the live US Store listing for its current details.
