Yes. Terraria has an Aether Pylon, and it can be placed where the Aether condition is met. You don’t buy it from an NPC: throw another pylon into Shimmer to transmute it. The Aether Pylon also has a special biome check that can recognize the Aether on the Surface or in the Underworld, even though the Aether normally occurs underground.

How to get an Aether Pylon

Transmute a different pylon by throwing it into Shimmer. The Aether Pylon is not sold by an NPC. See the Terraria Wiki’s Pylons page for its acquisition and placement details.

Where you can place it

The Aether Pylon’s usable biome is the Aether. Unlike the biome’s usual layer behavior, its pylon check can count the Aether on the Surface or in the Underworld as well as in the Underground or Cavern layers. The Aether itself ordinarily appears in the Underground or Cavern layers.

An Aether biome requires at least 300 Shimmer tiles. In worlds generated before Terraria 1.4.4, the Aether does not generate naturally; the wiki notes that an artificial Aether can be created with sufficient Shimmer in the Underground or Cavern layers. See The Aether for biome and generation details.

What you need for pylon travel

Placing the Aether Pylon is only part of setting up travel. Pylon use still depends on the ordinary network requirements:

  • At least two housed NPCs must be near the pylon at both the departure and destination locations.
  • You must be close enough to the pylon you are using.
  • Regular pylons must be in their respective biomes.
  • Only one pylon of each type can be placed in a world.

The Aether Pylon’s special biome check does not remove these network requirements.
