Possibly—it depends on the game, how the crosshair works, and whether you are playing in a competition with extra rules. A fixed overlay is not automatically safe just because it does not change game files, and a publisher’s policy for one game does not apply to another. Fortnite says custom crosshairs are unsupported but does not make a blanket ban ruling for every third-party app; Battlefield 6 specifically prohibits adaptive crosshair overlays in its anti-cheat guidance.
What makes a custom crosshair risky?
“Custom crosshair” can mean anything from a setting built into the game to an external overlay or hardware feature. Publishers may treat those implementations differently. The practical questions are whether the game supports the feature, whether a tool reads or reacts to live gameplay, whether it changes with game context, and whether it provides an advantage beyond a fixed visual marker.
- In-game setting: Use it when the publisher provides and supports it.
- External overlay or hardware: Check the game’s own policy; third-party status alone does not settle whether a specific tool is permitted.
- Gameplay-aware or adaptive tool: Treat it as higher risk, especially if it responds to game state or offers a competitive advantage.
- Competitive event: Read the event rules as well as the game’s general policy. Tournament requirements can be more specific.
These are useful checks, not a guarantee that a tool in any category is allowed.
What do the game publishers say?
Fortnite
Epic Games Support says, “Custom crosshairs are not supported in Fortnite.” That means Epic does not support the feature; it does not say that every custom-crosshair overlay automatically results in a ban. On third-party software, Epic says it “cannot determine or disclose whether using a specific third-party software can lead to a ban in Fortnite,” and that players use such software at their own risk. See Epic’s Fortnite custom-crosshair guidance and its third-party software guidance.

For the 2026 FNCS, Epic’s rules dated March 19, 2026 prohibit programs, hardware, or tools that access real-time game state to gain a competitive advantage. The rules distinguish those tools from general system overlays without gameplay awareness, which they allow. The provision applies to that named competition; it should not be treated as a universal ruling for ordinary play or every app implementation. Read the 2026 FNCS official rules.
Battlefield 6
EA’s Battlefield 6 Season 4 anti-cheat update expressly lists crosshair overlays that adapt or can be modified while running—such as changing color based on location or game context—as prohibited software examples. This is a specific Battlefield 6 example, not a universal rule for all games or a determination about every static overlay. See EA’s Season 4 anti-cheat update.

VALORANT
Riot’s general standard is that unauthorized hardware or software giving players an unfair in-game advantage can lead to a permanent account ban. Riot’s developer policy also bars products that create an unfair advantage. Those statements establish the general standard, but they do not classify every static crosshair overlay by name. See Riot’s anti-cheat support article and Riot’s developer policies.
Unsupported, prohibited, and unspecified are different
A publisher saying a feature is unsupported does not, by itself, establish that every tool using it will trigger a ban. A rule that expressly prohibits a tool or behavior is stronger and applies within the scope of that rule. If the publisher does not specifically address a particular crosshair app, that silence is not approval.

Epic’s Terms of Service prohibit cheats, including cheat software, tools, and hardware, and say Epic may suspend or terminate accounts if it finds evidence of cheats. But those broad terms do not establish that every crosshair utility is a cheat. Whether a particular tool falls under a game’s rules depends on its behavior and the applicable policy. Read Epic’s Terms of Service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what to do
- Start with the game and mode. Check the current official support guidance for the game, then look for separate ranked or tournament rules if you compete.
- Identify how the crosshair works. A built-in setting, an external overlay, and a hardware feature are different implementations; do not assume a policy for one covers the others.
- Check for game awareness or adaptation. If the tool reads, captures, or responds to live game state, or changes based on location or context, it may fall under rules against gameplay-aware overlays or unfair advantages.
- Use supported in-game options if you want the lowest policy risk. If you are considering external software, look for an explicit statement from the publisher or event organizer covering that tool and use case.
There is no published ban rate or detection probability in the cited official guidance, and the available policies do not resolve whether every static, non-adaptive overlay is allowed in every game. If the rules do not clearly cover your specific app, do not treat that uncertainty as permission—especially before entering a tournament.
