Can a Kid Play Resident Evil? A Parent’s Guide to Ratings and Content

Usually, Resident Evil is not a good fit to assume is suitable for a child. The ESRB-rated entries covered here are rated M for Mature 17+ and their content summaries describe graphic violence and gore. Check the rating for the exact game and platform, then weigh its content against your child’s age and sensitivity. These ratings are from the United States ESRB system; other countries use different rating systems.

Why the exact Resident Evil game matters

Resident Evil is a franchise, not a single game with one rating. Releases can differ in content, so identify the specific title and platform before deciding. The examples below show a consistent reason for caution, but they do not establish that every Resident Evil release has identical content.

What ESRB ratings say about these games

Each of the five ESRB-rated entries below is rated M for Mature 17+. ESRB age categories are guidance, not a legal rule for every family. The content descriptors offer more detail about why a game received its rating.

Game ESRB rating and descriptors What the rating summary describes
Resident Evil 7 biohazard M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language First-person survival horror, weapons, dismemberment, graphic injuries, and disturbing cutscenes.
Resident Evil 5 M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language Shooting infected enemies, blood spray, dismemberment or decapitation, and strong profanity.
Resident Evil Revelations M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language Blood-splatter effects, dismemberment, corpses, and violent cutscenes.
Resident Evil 6 M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes The listed descriptors indicate additional content concerns beyond violence and language.
Resident Evil Requiem M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language; in-game purchases The rating record also flags in-game purchases.

How to check whether a particular game is right for your child

  1. Find the exact release. Check the full game title and platform; do not rely on the franchise name alone.
  2. Read the age category and descriptors together. ESRB’s parent guide to the rating system explains that the category signals age appropriateness while descriptors identify content types. The guide advises: “Parents should use both parts of the rating system to make sure they are choosing games for their families that they deem appropriate.”
  3. Consider your child, not just the number. The M 17+ category is a strong caution for younger players. Consider how your child responds to graphic imagery, horror, violence, and strong language; a family decision does not change the game’s rating.
  4. Check online features separately. ESRB’s guide says the online-interaction notice flags possible chat or user-generated content that is not considered in the rating assignment. Review the game’s online options and the platform’s parental controls before play.
  5. Confirm the local rating. ESRB is the United States rating system. If you live elsewhere, check the rating board and rating record used in your country.

What the ratings do—and do not—settle

The reviewed ESRB records give parents concrete reasons to be cautious: all five titles are M for Mature 17+, and the summaries repeatedly identify intense violence and blood or gore. Descriptors vary by game; for example, Resident Evil 6 also lists nudity and suggestive themes. A rating is useful guidance, but it cannot decide how a particular child will react or replace checking the specific release and its features.
