Sometimes, but not reliably in every country or currency. Steam says a Wallet Code can be redeemed only in the currency used by the recipient’s Steam Wallet. Its published guidance does not guarantee that every card bought abroad will work, so check the exact code’s currency and the seller’s location terms before purchasing.
What determines whether a Steam Wallet card will work abroad?
The key check is currency: Steam limits Wallet Code redemption to the currency of the recipient’s Steam Wallet. Don’t assume Steam will convert any foreign-currency card automatically. That means a card’s country of purchase alone may not answer the question. Confirm the code’s currency and the seller’s terms for the recipient’s location. If either is unclear, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than promising the code will redeem.
How should you buy Steam credit for someone in another country?
- Ask the recipient which currency their Steam Wallet uses.
- Check that the specific card or code is issued in that currency and that the seller accepts it for the recipient’s location.
- Read the product’s denomination and region terms. If they do not clearly establish compatibility, choose another option.

Does a Wallet Code change the account’s country?
No. A Wallet Code adds money to the Steam Wallet; it does not change the Steam Store country. Steam says the store country should reflect where the user currently resides. Its country-change process requires a local payment method and permits a change only once every three months. Steam Wallet FAQ

What if you already have a code?
- Sign in to Steam and open the Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page.
- Enter the unique code in the Steam Wallet Code field and continue.
- If the code does not work, check that its currency matches the recipient’s Wallet currency and review any seller-specific location terms.
- Steam says retail card activation can take several hours. If the problem persists, contact Steam Support with a clear image of the card and the matching receipt. Steam Wallet FAQ
Are physical Steam gift cards still sold?
Steam says it is ending its retail Steam Gift Card program and will not restock cards as retailers sell through their inventories. It expects retail stock to run out by the end of 2026. How can you avoid scams and account restrictions?
- Wallet gift-card value can be used on Steam for products such as games, in-game items, software, and hardware. Steam warns against giving codes to people you do not know. A stranger asking you to reveal or send a code is a reason to stop. Steam Wallet FAQ
- Do not use a VPN or proxy to disguise your location to bypass a region restriction. Steam says doing so to redeem a restricted game gift violates its Terms of Service and can lead to account restrictions. Steam also prohibits bypassing regional pricing or content restrictions.
