In 2026, the Canadian studios behind Dead by Daylight and Darkest Dungeon marked their games’ tenth anniversaries with a crossover built around costumes, not a merger of the games. Behaviour Interactive’s Ruin Rift brought six Darkest Dungeon-inspired outfits, plus badges and banners, to Dead by Daylight. The creative leads described the designs as adaptations: familiar heroes reimagined to fit Dead by Daylight, rather than literal transfers of characters into a new game.
What the Ruin Rift crossover includes
Behaviour announced Ruin Rift on April 28, 2026, as a Dead by Daylight Rift featuring cosmetics inspired by Darkest Dungeon. Its six outfit pairings are:
- Meg Thomas as the Hellion
- The Nurse as the Collector
- David King as the Highwayman
- The Blight as the Prophet
- Vittorio Toscano as the Leper
- Zarina Kassir as the Plague Doctor
The event also includes themed badges and banners. Behaviour’s Ruin Rift announcement describes unlockable cosmetics; it does not announce a playable Darkest Dungeon character, a new killer, map, or game mode.
How the idea came about
The collaboration grew out of the studios’ relationship and their shared interest in the other game. In a MobileSyrup interview published April 21, 2026, Dead by Daylight senior creative director Dave Richard said the teams were part of the same family and that Behaviour’s developers were fans of Darkest Dungeon. “Both studios are part of the same family, so it was like, ‘Yeah, we absolutely need to do something at some point.’”

Red Hook co-founder and creative director Chris Bourassa said the idea had also been raised during the acquisition process. Behaviour announced in September 2024 that it had acquired Vancouver-based Red Hook, creator of the Darkest Dungeon series, while saying the studio would continue as an independent studio within Behaviour. Bourassa described the later collaboration as a functional partnership and praised the care taken with Red Hook’s intellectual property. Those are his assessments of the relationship, not an independent evaluation of the acquisition.
Why the outfits are adaptations, not character transfers
The teams’ design framework was to have Dead by Daylight characters cosplay as heroes from Darkest Dungeon. “And so the framework that we kind of adopted as a group was just that the Dead by Daylight characters are going to cosplay as Darkest Dungeon characters,” Bourassa told MobileSyrup.
#1 Best Overall
- A Kotobukiya import
- From the groundbreaking multiplayer horror game
- Comes to life striking his signature weapon, the Wailing Bell
- Every element and texture of The Wraith is perfectly brought to life
- Base design recreates the characteristic details of The Wraith's stage in the game
That approach let the designers retain recognizable visual ideas while adjusting the outfits for Dead by Daylight’s character rigs and production pipeline. Richard said the team wanted to preserve iconic features and get the tone right. Bourassa characterized the result as influence and idea-sharing, rather than one character literally becoming another: “It’s more just like a good-natured influence and an idea sharing, as opposed to, ‘No, no, no, you’re literally this character from Darkest Dungeon in this other game.’”
The practical trade-off is between fidelity to the source designs and making costumes that work on the host game’s characters. The interview notes that some pairings were more difficult because of differences in character identity and clothing. The outfits should therefore be read as crossover interpretations, not established canon appearances for either series.

Two games, two different roles in the collaboration
Dead by Daylight is the multiplayer horror game hosting the Rift and its cosmetics; Darkest Dungeon is the turn-based RPG series supplying the visual inspiration. The interview’s creators did not frame the event as a merger of gameplay or audiences. Bourassa put the audience distinction simply: “They’re just different players.” The crossover connects the games through design, while leaving their formats and identities distinct.

Dead by Daylight’s anniversary
Dead by Daylight launched in 2016. In a June 2026 release, Behaviour said more than 70 million players had played the game since launch and that it averaged over a million players daily across platforms. These are company-reported figures, not an independently measured audience study. Behaviour also said nearly 500 people were on the Dead by Daylight team.
The same release said more than 3,000 fans were expected at a Montreal gathering on June 14, which was planned to conclude with a livestream and announcements. That number was an expectation published before the event, not a verified attendance count. Behaviour’s June anniversary announcement lays out the plans.

Darkest Dungeon’s anniversary
Red Hook’s August 18, 2026 announcement marked ten years of the original Darkest Dungeon and revealed The Fire’s Edge, the first new DLC for that game since 2020. The company said the expansion adds The Runaway and The Duelist, a combat mechanic, trinkets, and three Hamlet districts. Red Hook listed Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation, and Xbox, and announced a Nintendo Switch release for August 20. Because storefront availability can vary by platform and territory, consult Red Hook’s The Fire’s Edge page for current listings.
Behaviour reported in 2024 that Darkest Dungeon and Darkest Dungeon II had sold more than seven million copies combined. That was the company’s figure at the time, not a current sales total, and it measures copies sold rather than the player figures Behaviour reported for Dead by Daylight.
