Can You Think Like a YC Partner? YC Arena’s Game Puts Your Startup Judgement to the Test

YC Arena’s Partner Simulator asks you to judge real YC applicant pitch videos. Here’s what the game tests—and what its score cannot prove.

YC Arena’s Partner Simulator lets you watch real, publicly available Y Combinator applicant pitch videos and decide whether you would accept or reject each startup. After you make the call, the game reveals YC’s recorded decision. It is a test of how well you read a short pitch—not a simulation of YC’s full application review or a reliable way to predict admission.

How YC Arena’s Partner Simulator works

Each round pairs a pitch video with the application year. You choose accept or reject, then see whether your decision matches YC’s. The format makes the comparison immediate: your call is set against the outcome YC recorded for that applicant.

That comparison is necessarily narrow. You are judging from the video presented in the game, while YC’s guidance describes considering the application as a whole—including the written answers, video, demo, and other information when a company looks promising. The game does not provide the full application or recreate YC’s deliberations. TechCrunch’s October 3, 2025 report describes the game, and YC’s application guide explains its broader review context.

What the game can—and cannot—tell you

The Partner Simulator can make you examine what you notice in a founder’s short explanation: whether the idea is clear, whether the company’s purpose comes across, and what you infer from a brief pitch. It cannot tell you whether you would be a good YC partner, whether a company will succeed, or whether YC would accept your own application. A match with YC’s past decision is a comparison with that recorded outcome, not proof that your reasoning mirrors the people who made it.

Startups, High-Risk Business Strategy Card Game, 2–7 Players, Ages 10+
  • "Startups" is the updated version of an older Oink Game which came out in 2015 and won the second prize at Game Market Tokyo: "Rights". We upgraded the rules, the design and it is even possible to play with more players now!
  • Every player takes the role of an investor and needs to try to invest in at least one of six startup companies to get the biggest shares. Only the player with the most cards of one company can get money in the end, which is why you need to carefully watch the moves of your rival players and thus become the top investor.
  • To make the original game even more interesting, we added "the market", the "Anti-Monopoly-Chip" and more. The rules are still as simple as they were, but if you have played "Rights" before you should notice a new depth to it.
  • The logos of the six startup companies were designed by Kentaro "ANI" Fujimoto who is a famous typographer in Japan. We recommend talking about the different logos and about what kind of company stands behind it - it's fun!

TechCrunch’s reporter described the judgments as difficult and subjective. She said her guesses improved after reading Paul Graham’s application guide and paying closer attention to clarity. That is one person’s experience, not validated evidence that a particular pitch tactic predicts acceptance.

Graham’s advice is to explain the company plainly and get to the point: “Whatever you have to say, give it to us right in the first sentence, in the simplest possible terms.” He also cautions applicants against marketing-speak. A pitch video is not the same as a demo

YC’s official instructions distinguish the application video from a product demo or promotional video. The one-minute video is for founders to explain what they are doing and why; YC says it should contain only the founders talking. That distinction matters when interpreting a game round: the video is a short introduction, not necessarily a showcase of the product or all the evidence YC weighs. YC’s application instructions provide the current guidance.

Other YC Arena game modes

The Partner Simulator is one of three game formats TechCrunch described on YC Arena. The others shift the task from evaluating a pitch to recognizing companies:

The Partner Simulator was the most compelling mode for TechCrunch’s reporter because it forced her to confront her own decision-making. The other modes offer a different kind of recall challenge. TechCrunch’s report covers all three, while YC Arena’s game page presents the online experience.

Don’t read a rejection as a verdict on a company

YC Arena itself cautions that many founders it rejected later built successful companies. A rejection records YC’s decision in a particular application context; it does not establish that a startup was doomed, or that an accept/reject prediction is a judgment of its eventual prospects. That is another reason to play for the challenge of making a call, not as a definitive measure of startup quality. YC Arena’s page includes this caveat.

What to know about the game’s size and YC’s acceptance rate

In its October 3, 2025 article, TechCrunch described YC’s acceptance rate as estimated at around 1%. That is a qualified estimate reported at that time, not a current official YC statistic. YC Arena’s page displayed a notice saying “Over 400 new YC application videos to be added on 01/30/26.” The notice does not confirm that the videos were added or establish the game’s present video count. TechCrunch’s report and YC Arena’s page are the sources for those dated details.

Verdict: a useful perspective check, not an admissions simulator

If you enjoy startup pitches, YC Arena’s Partner Simulator offers a simple, revealing challenge: make your own accept-or-reject call, then compare it with YC’s recorded one. Its value is in the act of judging and reflecting on what persuaded you—not in claiming to reproduce YC’s process or forecast future admissions.
