This DOOM: The Dark Ages Chapter 5 walkthrough covers the Holy City of Aratum’s dragon-flight tutorial, Hell Carrier objectives, secret landing zones, keycards, upgrades, and collectible locations. The carrier objectives can be tackled in flexible order; use the route below as an efficient way to gather rewards, not as a required sequence.
How Chapter 5 works
Chapter 5 introduces dragon flight with Serrat, then shifts to destroying Hell Carriers. PC Gamer’s 2025 guide says the carriers can be tackled in roughly any order, so you can pursue a secret landing zone between main objectives rather than following one fixed route. Some rewards still require switches or keycards.

Collectible counts differ by guide: PC Gamer reports nine secrets and four collectibles, including the Nightmare Pulverizer skin, Serrat toy, and two codex entries. PowerPyx reports 17 collectible locations, two rubies, two Demonic Essence upgrades, and three mission challenges. These guides use different counting and ordering systems, so their totals should not be treated as a single shared checklist.
Holy City of Aratum walkthrough and secret route
1. Complete the dragon tutorial
Follow the tutorial prompts to learn the flight controls and continue until the mission shifts to destroying Hell Carriers. From there, use the route below as a suggested order; the carrier objectives are not presented as a mandatory sequence.

2. First secret landing zone: tower plaza
At the start, face the Hell Carrier and look down-left toward a titan on a circular tower. Defeat the titan to unlock the landing zone. Land, shield-bash the plaza totem, then clear the enemy waves and boss. Follow the path around the tower to reach the gold chest. PC Gamer identifies the encounter’s upgrade reward as a maximum-health Demonic Essence.
3. Second landing zone: Nightmare Pulverizer skin
Dive to the circular area below the carrier ahead and defeat the two titans guarding it. Land and descend to the beach. Enter the building through the opening in the wall, then follow the interior route to the Nightmare Pulverizer skin.
Finding both secret landing zones completes the Layover challenge according to PC Gamer. PowerPyx lists Layover’s reward as 50 gold.

4. Ruby and red keycard at the second landing zone
Near the blue torches, defeat the enemy and stand on the green pressure plate to raise a platform. Throw your shield at the lock to reveal the well. Use the valve to drain the water, break the lock inside, and collect the red keycard. Return to the tower and use the keycard to reach the ruby.
5. Second-carrier city area: well and life sigil
From the Sentinel Shrine, turn right and jump down the well to collect supplies and gold. Swim upward to the exit, which leads to a gold chest.
For the life sigil, enter the nearby ship and clear the graveyard. Climb the cliff and take the blue keycard from the corpse overlooking the gate. Return to the locked door and use the card to open it.

6. Third carrier: Holy City of Aratum codex and ruby
At the main building entrance where you find the Super Shotgun, turn right and climb the scaffolding. Break the chain with your shield to lower the drawbridge, then shield-bash the box across. Use it as an improvised step to climb up and follow the scaffolding back inside for the Holy City of Aratum codex.
To reach the ruby, throw your shield at the chandelier above the pressure plate across from the gate. The falling chandelier opens the gate.

7. Serrat toy and carrier gold chest
Before crossing the bridge into the third Hell Carrier, turn right and drop to the ramparts to enter a hidden area. Clear the ambush and climb the stairs to find the Serrat toy and a shortcut.

After crossing into the carrier, take the stairs on the left into the arena to find a gold chest.
8. Deag Loric codex in the final carrier
Before destroying the final carrier’s engine, turn around after dropping toward the final room and check beneath the route for the Deag Loric codex. PC Gamer places it on the lower ship layer, accessible through the fleshy tunnels to the right of the starting area.

PowerPyx describes Countercult as dispatching all cultist circles for a ruby reward. It describes Layover as dismounting at both secret landing zones for 50 gold. PowerPyx lists three chapter challenges, but the available description does not identify the third objective; check the in-game challenge list rather than relying on an unverified name.
