WIRED interpreted the phrase “Notices Bulge, OWO What’s This?” as a furry-related meme and the arrows as resembling a Helldivers 2 input. Those are explanations of references, not proof of Tyler Robinson’s motive. Prosecutors have separately argued that an inscription supports political targeting; the defense has disputed that interpretation.
What inscriptions were reported?
ABC News Australia reported on September 17, 2025, that charging documents described inscriptions on ammunition connected to the case. WIRED’s September 12 explainer discussed two references that drew attention online:
| Reported inscription or mark | How it was interpreted | What that interpretation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| “Notices Bulge, OWO What’s This?” | WIRED connected the wording to an online furry-related meme. | It offers a possible cultural reference, not evidence by itself of Robinson’s identity, beliefs, or motive. |
| An arrow sequence | WIRED said it resembled a button-input sequence from Helldivers 2. | It is a reported resemblance, not conclusive proof that the game inspired the mark or why it was made. |
| “Hey Facist! CATCH!” | Prosecutors later cited this engraving as support for their claim of political targeting. | That is a prosecutorial argument, which the defense disputed—not a court finding. |
Descriptions vary between inscriptions on ammunition, casings, or bullets. It is therefore safer to refer to reported inscriptions on ammunition rather than imply that every message was on a fired bullet.
What does “Notices Bulge, OWO What’s This?” mean?
WIRED described the wording as a reference to an online furry-related meme. The phrase is written to evoke an exaggerated, playful reaction; “OWO” is a stylized emoticon used in internet expression. The wording’s association with furry meme culture explains why observers recognized it, but it does not establish that Robinson identified with that subculture or that the reference reflects a serious personal or political belief.

ABC News Australia also reported that a message attributed to Robinson, in an exchange described in charging documents, called the inscriptions “mostly a big meme.” That is a reported statement attributed to the accused, not an official determination of what the inscriptions meant or why they were made.
Was the arrow code from Helldivers 2?
WIRED interpreted an arrow sequence as resembling a game input associated with Helldivers 2. The careful answer is that it was reported as a possible reference to the game—not established as a definitive identification, and not an explanation of motive. A recognizable pattern can support an interpretation without proving who chose it or what they intended by it.

Do the inscriptions prove a motive?
No. The wording and symbols are reported evidence that journalists and observers have interpreted, while motive is a separate question argued in court. PolitiFact’s September 12, 2025 coverage likewise treated explanations of the online references and their political significance as interpretations rather than settled conclusions.
In a report published August 19, 2026, the Associated Press said prosecutors argued that the engraving “Hey Facist! CATCH!” supported their claim that Kirk was targeted for political reasons. The defense disputed that inference. The inscription and the competing explanations are part of the parties’ arguments; neither the prosecutor’s theory nor an online reading is itself a judicial finding.

What is the status of the Tyler Robinson case?
According to the Associated Press on September 1, 2026, Judge Tony Graf ordered the case to proceed to trial, and Robinson pleaded not guilty. At that hearing, prosecutors argued that the shooting created a great risk of death to others; the defense challenged whether the alleged conduct met the relevant aggravating element. The case remained pending in that report, so the allegations and arguments should not be described as a verdict or proven findings.
Earlier, ABC News Australia’s September 17, 2025 account of charging documents reported that investigators relied on text exchanges, campus video, recovery of a rifle, and a reported DNA match involving the weapon, ammunition, and a towel. Those are details attributed to the charging-document account, not a final judicial finding.
