The categories can overlap, but the key distinction is intent: a hidden joke is usually an Easter egg; unused content or an area reachable only through a glitch may be a secret without being a designed discovery.
How cheats, secrets, and Easter eggs differ
| Term | Useful working definition | Typical purpose or effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cheat | An entered code or input that changes gameplay. This is a useful definition in the context of the Grand Theft Auto series, not a universal formal standard (Grand Theft Wiki, page last modified December 5, 2011). | Make play easier or alter it for fun. In DOOM, “idkfa” is an example of a direct gameplay cheat (Preserving Virtual Worlds report). |
| Secret | Concealed content, sometimes not intended for ordinary player access. | A hidden area, unused asset, or discovery that may require unusual access. Grand Theft Wiki describes Grand Theft Auto III’s “Ghost Town” as accessible through modification or difficult flight (Grand Theft Wiki). |
| Easter egg | A message, event, or effect intentionally hidden by developers, typically missed during ordinary play or requiring inside knowledge (Preserving Virtual Worlds report). | A joke, reference, signature, homage, or other surprise for players who find it. Grand Theft Wiki gives the hidden heart inside the Statue of Happiness in Grand Theft Auto IV as an example (Grand Theft Wiki). |
| Myth | A feature players believe exists but that may not be in the game. | For example, the Bigfoot story in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is cited as a myth; treat such claims as unverified until reliable evidence establishes them (Grand Theft Wiki). |
| Mod or trainer | Software or changes that alter a game, potentially without the publisher’s authorization. | Can enable altered play or access content, but is not automatically an Easter egg or developer-intended feature (Grand Theft Wiki). |
These labels are not always used consistently by players. A feature’s discovery method alone does not settle what it is: entering a code can reveal a cheat, while exploring normally can uncover an Easter egg. Ask whether the content was intended as a player-facing surprise, what it changes, and whether reaching it requires a glitch or modification.
Why developers hide content
Hidden content can reward curiosity, add humor, acknowledge earlier games, or let developers leave a signature. The Preserving Virtual Worlds report also identifies advertising for upcoming games and genre in-jokes among Easter egg purposes, and notes cross-references among Sierra adventure games. An intended surprise can be as small as a message or as substantial as an unusual event or extra content.
Not everything hidden in a game was placed there for players to find. Some assets are unused, inaccessible during normal play, or exposed only by a glitch or modification. Calling every strange object an Easter egg can imply intent that has not been established.

How players have found cheats and hidden content
Codes and printed sources
Cheats have not always been discovered by experimentation alone. The British Computer Society’s account of early home games describes an era when games were sold on disks, tapes, and cartridges, with limited opportunity to issue patches after release. Codes appeared in instruction books and magazines; some magazine codes came directly from game production companies. Dedicated programs and cartridges also helped players alter games or find secrets.
The BCS describes hidden codes and Easter eggs as “treats for those willing to look for them.” Its account captures how finding a code could be part of the game’s surrounding culture, not just a way to skip a difficult section.
Exploration, sequences, and unusual access
Players may discover intended surprises by exploring off the main route, interacting with unusual objects, revisiting locations, or trying a sequence of actions. Other discoveries depend on precise timing or input. A concealed area that can only be reached through a glitch is a different case from a developer-designed joke in an ordinary room: the former may be technically present without being intended as a normal discovery.
When checking a specific claim, establish which game, platform, and edition it concerns, then confirm whether the feature still works in the patched or remastered version. A code or route documented for one release should not be assumed to apply to another.

Are cheat codes still in games?
Cheat codes and Easter eggs are not limited to one era, but the available sources do not establish a current, industry-wide count or a reliable trend measurement. A 2023 Jalopnik feature on racing games observes broadly that cheats and Easter eggs were more common in older games and illustrates a range from unlocks to unusual hidden vehicles. That is a journalist’s observation, not a quantified measure of how often games include them today.
Older releases often reached players on fixed media, and developers had fewer opportunities to patch them after sale, according to the BCS account. That context helps explain why printed codes and durable hidden features mattered, but it does not prove that any particular modern game lacks cheats or secrets.

How to verify a code or supposed Easter egg
- Identify the exact release. Record the game title, platform, edition, and whether it is an original, patched, or remastered version.
- Separate the claim from its label. Note what the feature is said to do and how it is reached; decide separately whether evidence supports calling it a cheat, secret, Easter egg, myth, or mod.
- Check a reliable, game-specific source. Prefer documentation that names the relevant platform and edition. A broad overview or an old franchise reference does not verify a current code.
- Confirm the result in the matching version. Codes, effects, and access methods can vary by platform or edition. Do not apply an unverified input to another release and assume it will work.
- Be cautious with downloads and modifications. A trainer or mod changes the game; check its provenance and the publisher’s rules rather than treating it as built-in content.
This guide explains the categories and history, not a current code list for a particular title. Exact inputs and present-day availability need verification against the game and release in question.
