To open a standard Paint Cage in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, find and shoot its three glowing locks with free aim. Search all around the cage—including walls, elevated spots, and objects behind it—if one is hard to spot. The Monolith Paint Sphere is a special case that requires Paint Break.
How to open a standard Paint Cage
- Approach the cage and scan the surrounding area for three glowing orbs or locks.
- Use free aim to shoot each lock. MapMaster’s guide says free aim is available from the start, so a standard cage does not ordinarily require unlocking a special ability: MapMaster’s Paint Cage guide.
- Once all three locks are destroyed, approach the cage and collect the reward.
Where to look for the locks
Do not search only at ground level or directly beside the cage. A lock may be on a nearby wall, above the cage, behind it, or attached to a destructible object. Circle the area and look up before concluding that you are missing a required ability. MapMaster describes locks that can be difficult to see, while the Flying Waters walkthrough gives a specific example of locks on walls and a mine: MapMaster and Expedition33.gg.

Monolith Paint Sphere: the Paint Break exception
The Monolith Paint Sphere has an additional requirement described in Playnews’s guide: find four Lost Gestrals to obtain Paint Break, then use it to destroy the sphere’s three locks. The reward listed for this location is the Random Defense Picto. This prerequisite is specific to the Monolith example; it does not mean every Paint Cage requires Paint Break: Playnews’s Monolith guide.
