What should you do first in Black Myth: Wukong?
Start by learning the rhythm of an encounter rather than trying to deal damage continuously: approach, attack in a short string, watch the enemy’s response, evade or wait, then punish its recovery. This loop stays useful as enemies become tougher because it leaves room to react. The game combines staff techniques with spells, abilities, weapons, and equipment, so there is no need to assume one fixed build is the only way to play. PlayStation’s game description likewise emphasizes combining these tools to suit your combat style.

How do you manage stamina, attacks, and dodges?
Attacks and dodges compete for your practical stamina budget. A long attack string can leave you unable to respond when an enemy retaliates, so stop attacking before the bar is nearly empty. A short, controlled string followed by a dodge or a pause is generally safer than holding an attack button and hoping to out-damage the opponent.
Use the enemy’s behavior to decide when to re-engage. If it is still attacking, focus on avoiding the sequence; once it has finished and is recovering, take a short punish. How do you use Focus?
Focus supports stronger heavy or varied attacks, but the value comes from timing, not spending it as soon as it is available. Look for a confirmed recovery, stagger, or an opening you created with a spell, then use the stronger attack while the enemy cannot immediately punish you. Avoid committing Focus in the middle of an active attack or a phase change, when the target may not stay vulnerable.
This is a practical rule, not a universal boss script: enemies differ, and no single opening pattern applies to every fight. If an attack repeatedly gets interrupted, spend the next attempt learning the enemy’s sequence before trying to force the same punish.
How do the stances work, and which should you try?
The three Staff Stances—Smash, Pillar, and Thrust—offer different approaches. Their best fit depends on the distance and timing you are comfortable managing; the available guidance does not establish one universally correct stance.

Epic Games Store’s guide favors Thrust for versatility, but that is the guide’s recommendation, not a rule of the game. Try a stance that feels intuitive first, then switch when an enemy’s distance, attacks, or your own timing make another approach more comfortable.
Which skills should you unlock first?
Sparks unlock skill nodes. Epic’s guide says you earn them by leveling and by interacting with a Meditation Spot for the first time. The Foundation tree includes Stamina, Martial Arts, and Survival areas. As a broad starting point, favor stamina-related upgrades, survival options, or basic staff skills you use often before committing early points to a specialized choice without a clear need.
Epic specifically recommends stamina-related skills and Mobile Spin as early options. Treat that as an editorial recommendation rather than developer-mandated progression: the right choice depends on what is giving you trouble and how you fight. If stamina is the problem, invest there; if you can manage stamina but struggle to respond to attacks, consider a skill that supports your preferred defensive or staff approach.

You can experiment rather than treating each early Spark as irreversible. Epic documents refunding a single skill or all points through the Self-Advance menu. To respec, open Self-Advance and choose the refund option for the skill or the full set of points, then spend the returned Sparks on the approach you want to test.
When should you use spells?
Spells consume mana, so think of them as limited tools rather than automatic additions to every attack string. Epic groups the listed spells by type:

Use a control spell such as Immobilize when you are close enough to take advantage of the window. Consider defensive options when an enemy’s sequence is dangerous. If a boss attempt is still mainly teaching you its pattern, preserving mana can be more useful than casting spells without a planned follow-up. Exact spell value depends on the encounter and your timing.

Should you explore before fighting the boss?
Usually, explore nearby paths before moving on if you want more chances to find useful rewards—but do not turn every optional encounter into a first-hour requirement. Keeper’s Shrines are checkpoints and route anchors. Activate them as you encounter them, note the path toward the next objective, and pay attention to shortcuts and enemy groups that cost you healing. That makes a return trip more informative than simply repeating the same approach.
Side routes can lead to Yaoguai Chiefs and their Spirits, which provide powerful temporary attacks, as well as Meditation Spots that award Sparks on first interaction. A nearby detour may therefore give you a useful tool or skill point before your next major fight. Xbox Wire’s August 18, 2025 guide for the Xbox Series X|S release also recommends looking out for these optional rewards.
Chapter 1 optional route: the three bells
Chapter-specific, optional guidance: In Chapter 1, finding and ringing all three bells unlocks a hidden area that rewards the Fireproof Mantle, which grants burn immunity. It is not required to progress through the game. If you care about this reward, consider a spoiler-light route for the bell sequence before advancing past the relevant part of Chapter 1.

What about the Wandering Wight?
The Wandering Wight can be left for later if it is proving too difficult; it is not a compulsory first-hour fight. Its Spirit and the Chapter 1 bell route have a timing relationship, however, so players who want that reward should check a spoiler-light route before advancing through the sequence. This is a completion-minded caution, not a reason every beginner must defeat the optional enemy immediately.
How should you approach a difficult fight?
- Use the shrine as your route anchor. Know how to reach the encounter and whether a shortcut is available.
- Spend an attempt observing. Notice the attack sequence, its range, and when the enemy pauses or recovers.
- Shorten your attack strings. Leave stamina for the dodge you may need next.
- Punish only clear openings. Use Focus or a spell when you have a realistic chance to follow through.
- Change one thing at a time. Try another stance, a refunded skill allocation, or a different spell plan if the same tactic keeps failing.
These are adaptable habits, not a guarantee that every boss will respond identically. The platform controls and current build can vary; Epic’s examples include PC keyboard inputs, so use your platform’s displayed controls rather than treating those keys as universal. Game Science’s Steam announcements and patch notes include dated updates, but the sources cited here do not establish the latest version across every platform.
