How to Install an M.2 SSD in a Handheld Gaming PC

M.2 SSD upgrades are model-specific. Confirm the drive size and interface, prepare your data and recovery plan, and follow the handheld maker’s service instructions.

You can replace or upgrade a handheld gaming PC’s M.2 SSD, but the right drive and procedure depend on the exact model. Check its official service guidance before buying: for example, the 2023 ASUS ROG Ally uses an M.2 2230 drive and excludes M.2 SATA SSDs, while Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 guide specifies M.2 2242 or 2280 over PCIe Gen 4. Back up or clone your data, prepare the correct operating-system recovery route, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for opening and disconnecting the battery.

Check which SSD fits your exact handheld

M.2 describes a family of drive form factors and connectors; it does not guarantee that a drive will fit or work in every handheld. Identify the precise model and generation, then confirm the drive length, supported interface, and any documented clearance limits in that device’s official guide before purchasing.

Device covered by the cited guide Documented SSD specification Important qualification
ASUS ROG Ally (2023) M.2 2230; M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. ASUS’s first-edition service manual is dated June 2023. Do not apply these details to Ally X or later models. ASUS support
Lenovo Legion Go (8.8-inch, Gen 2) One M.2 slot supporting 2242 or 2280 drives over PCIe Gen 4. These specifications are for Gen 2, not the original Legion Go, Go S, or another generation. The Lenovo guide was current on its support site as accessed October 7, 2026. Lenovo support
Steam Deck and other models Not established here. Check the official instructions for the exact model rather than inferring a drive size from another handheld.

The linked support pages are starting points; select your specific product and find its service or support guide. Compare SSD length and interface first, then capacity, price in your region, and single- or double-sided construction if the manufacturer documents a clearance restriction. A higher-rated SSD speed alone does not establish that games will load or run faster on your handheld.

Prepare data recovery before opening the case

Decide whether you will clone the old drive or install the operating system again. Back up important files either way. If you plan to clone, make sure the old drive is readable and that your cloning setup supports the new drive’s interface and physical length; a compatible USB NVMe enclosure may help. If you plan to reinstall, have the official recovery or installation media ready before removing the original SSD.

For SteamOS, Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page is the official recovery reference. Follow its current steps for your device; it does not replace a model-specific guide for physically changing the drive. Windows-based handhelds also need the appropriate recovery or installation route for their device.

Install the replacement SSD

This is a general outline, not a universal teardown procedure. Use your handheld manufacturer’s service instructions for the exact cover, fasteners, battery connector, and drive handling. If a part resists, the battery connection is unfamiliar, or you cannot follow the guide confidently, stop and seek qualified help.

  1. Confirm the model and drive. Match the replacement SSD’s length and supported interface to the official documentation. Do not assume that an M.2 SATA drive works in a PCIe/NVMe-only slot.
  2. Back up and stage recovery. Save important data and have your clone or official OS recovery method ready, along with another computer and suitable USB media if the process requires them.
  3. Shut down and prepare the work area. Fully power off the handheld, unplug the charger and peripherals, and remove external cards if the manufacturer instructs. Use a clean, stable surface and the driver specified by the device guide; there is no universal screwdriver bit for all handhelds.
  4. Open the device exactly as directed. Work carefully around the cover and avoid levering against the display, cables, or battery cells. Follow the manufacturer’s power and battery-disconnection instructions before removing or handling internal components.
  5. Replace the drive and retain its protective parts. Remove the specified retaining fastener, release the original SSD as the guide directs, and preserve any sleeve, foil, thermal pad, bracket, or screw. Insert the compatible replacement without force, secure it, and restore the original protective material in its documented position.
  6. Reassemble and restore the system. Reconnect the battery and close the case as instructed. Then restore your clone or use the device’s official OS recovery process. After setup, check that the system boots and recognizes the expected drive capacity, and install available updates.

Follow model-specific safety guidance

In its June 2023 ROG Ally service manual, ASUS says external power and the battery must be disconnected before the bottom cover is removed. ASUS also recommends professional supervision for installing the M.2 SSD module and points users to an authorized service center for assistance. That advice applies to the cited ROG Ally (2023) procedure; use the service guidance for your own model. Warranty and service terms vary by model and jurisdiction, so check with the manufacturer if coverage is a concern before opening the unit.

Troubleshoot a handheld that does not boot

  • The replacement drive is not detected: Shut down and follow the service guide before reopening the device. Check that the SSD is the documented length and interface and that it is fully seated and secured as instructed.
  • The drive is detected but the system will not start: Use the recovery route you prepared. A new SSD may need a restored clone or an operating-system installation before the handheld can boot.
  • The cover, connector, or drive will not move as expected: Stop rather than applying force. Recheck the exact model’s instructions or use professional service.
  • Repeated power attempts do not help: Avoid repeated power cycling and consult the manufacturer’s recovery guidance or service support.

Physical replacement is only one part of the upgrade: the handheld must also have a working boot setup, and the operating system needs to recognize the new drive. The exact recovery steps differ between devices and operating systems.
