Build a dated record that connects each actual-money charge to the relevant account, game or platform, and supporting document. Keep original statements and receipts, note what remains uncertain, and ask a qualified local legal adviser which records and deadlines matter for your claim. A record of a charge does not, by itself, establish who made it, whether it was authorized, or whether a refund or legal remedy is available.
Start with the accounts and payment routes
Make a list of the child’s gaming accounts, games, devices, consoles, app stores or platforms, and any payment methods that may have been used. Include the adult account or cardholder associated with a charge when known. Children’s game purchases may flow through stored payment methods or be converted into in-game currency, so one account history may not tell the whole story. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains how virtual currencies and inconsistent exchange rates can obscure real-world costs: CFPB consumer advisory on video-game spending.
Label uncertain connections as uncertain. For example, a bank entry may identify an app store or payment processor rather than the particular game or player account. Do not treat that as proof of who made the purchase.
Collect records from each source
Save the records that show the payment, the account or service involved, and any steps taken to resolve the issue. Keep the original files or statements where possible; make working copies for your chronology.

- Game, platform, or app-store history: Purchase history, order confirmations, receipts, account notices, and any available transaction details.
- Payment records: Bank, credit-card, or mobile-payment statements showing the amount in real currency, date, and merchant descriptor.
- In-game records: Any available record linking a real-money purchase to virtual currency, an item, or another account event.
- Communications: Support tickets, emails, complaint or reference numbers, refund requests, and provider responses.
- Context: The relevant account identifier, game, device, and platform. Do not include passwords or unrelated sensitive account data in a working packet.
Official UK parent guidance recommends checking bills for money taken without a parent’s knowledge or consent and contacting the game operator or platform provider about unexpected charges. It is practical consumer guidance, not a determination of your claim: GOV.UK advice for parents and carers.
Build a transaction ledger in actual currency
Use one row per charge. Copy the amount and date as they appear in the payment record, and add the game or account only when a source supports that connection. Keep virtual-currency quantities separate from cash amounts unless a receipt or other record documents the conversion.

| Merchant descriptor | The exact name or descriptor printed on the payment record. |
| Game, platform, or account | The service or account identified by a source; mark an attribution as uncertain if it is only a possibility. |
| Virtual currency or item | The amount or item shown in a game or platform record, if available. Do not assume it equals a particular cash value. |
| Supporting record | Identify the file, receipt, statement, or screenshot that supports the entry, and whether it is an original export, copy, or personal note. |
| Follow-up | Link to a dated refund request, provider response, reversal, or unresolved discrepancy where relevant. |
Account histories and payment statements answer different questions: one may identify a game purchase, while the other establishes the amount actually charged. Compare the dates and amounts across sources, and preserve discrepancies rather than silently reconciling them.
Write a separate chronology of discovery and follow-up
Keep a dated timeline alongside the ledger. Record when you discovered the charges, contacted the provider, requested a refund, changed a setting, or received a response. For each entry, distinguish a document you can produce from your own recollection. If you summarize a conversation, label it as a summary rather than a verbatim transcript.

- Record the date and how the issue came to your attention.
- List the transaction or transactions you reviewed, referring to the ledger entries.
- Note each contact with the game operator, platform, app store, or payment provider, including the method and any case number.
- Record the response or outcome and retain the original message or notice.
- Note any settings changed and the date, without implying that a later setting proves what was enabled earlier.
- Identify any amount still disputed, missing record, or unanswered question.
Keep a simple source index so another person can find each supporting record. A note might identify a statement page, receipt filename, account export, or screenshot date. This is an organizational practice; formal requirements for authenticating or presenting electronic records depend on the jurisdiction and proceeding.
Keep facts separate from legal conclusions
Use the records to describe what they show, not to decide issues they cannot establish on their own. A charge on a statement shows a payment entry; it may not show who initiated it, what the child understood, whether an adult consented, whether a trader broke the law, or whether money can be recovered. Mark gaps and disputed attribution clearly.

Consumer rules and complaint routes are not the same everywhere. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says online and mobile games are covered by Australian Consumer Law and provides a way to report potentially misleading conduct, but it does not resolve individual disputes or give legal advice: ACCC guidance on online and mobile games. UK government parent guidance likewise says its material is not legal advice. Neither source establishes the outcome of an individual claim.

Collect records that relate to the issue rather than broad, unrelated monitoring data. If you use parental controls or activity monitoring, explain them to the child in an age-appropriate way. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office notes that controls can restrict purchases or monitor activity, while also affecting children’s privacy and rights; its guidance recommends transparency about controls and tracking: ICO guidance on parental controls.

Purchase controls differ by device and service. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends setting parental controls across the devices a child uses and notes that available functions vary: FTC guide to parental controls. Check the current settings for the specific game, device, platform, and payment channel rather than assuming one setting covers them all.
Ask a local adviser what the claim requires
Take the ledger, chronology, source index, and relevant original records to a qualified lawyer or legal aid service in the applicable jurisdiction. Ask what to preserve, how electronic records should be authenticated, which deadlines apply, and which provider, regulator, or court route is appropriate. The answer can depend on where the parties are, the payment route, the claim type, and the facts.
For UK paid loot boxes, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport describes government policy and industry commitments concerning parental consent, spending controls, refunds, and information. Its guidance says the participating measures do not cover the entire UK games sector; it should not be read as a universal refund guarantee: DCMS update on loot-box protections. Separately, the Competition and Markets Authority’s online-game principles were published in 2014. The current page says they predate provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 that came into force on 6 April 2025, and that the retained original text is unamended; treat them as historical background, not a current standalone legal checklist: CMA online and app-based games principles.
